ricky hatton v DeMarcus Corley (primes)

Call me mad but.... Corley would have a really good chance in this one.

Hatton squared up horrendously against southpaws and struggled to get off properly and time his shots.

Plus, absolutely wide open to everything, especially the right hook.

Gut instinct says Hatton would get on his chest and win a relatively clear decision, but if he's not on he'd get turned over.

There's probably only Aaron Pryor who springs to mind, who's performance level dipped by a larger amount than Hatton, when comparing orthodox to southpaw.

 

hatton performed badly against a slick southpaw in callazo. corley isn't slick. he'd be bullied around the ring far too easily. hattons pressure would get to him real quick and stop him around the half way mark. corley usually collapsed mentally if someone really put it on him... and hatton would do this like no other. plus, collazo was a welter. corley wasn't.

hatton did really well against magee who's also a southpaw, but he just sat back and tried to counter because he knew he'd use up too much energy if he fought toe to toe with hatton early and would be stopped. corley wouldn't go for these tactics. he'd try to use the ring as much as possible, but this would be his big downfall because, as i say, he's just not slick enough like collazo was.

pretty straight forward win for hatton who breaks corley's will with a brutal head and body assault. hatton gets hit with a few shots, but nothing that worry's him.

 

Prime Hatton?

He takes it at a canter.

But prime hatton was a short lived sight. If it's the one after tzsyu then he makes a meal out of it, if it's the one after mayweather then he loses

 

We have to remember that it was the weight the fight was fought at that also helped collazo, not just his southpaw stance

 

Collazo wasn't particularly slick, the only decent shots Hatton landed were the sneaky right hands - which he didn't use nearly often enough, the rest were rabbit shots.

Still, I had him ahead at the end.

Considering Shane Mosley barely put a dent in him it's safe to say that Collazo was a hard man....

Certainly the wrong choice of opponent for Hatton's US showcase.

 

corely would have a great chance at a stoppage, corely hit awfully hard, the punch he caught mayweather with would have put hatton to bed. Hatton would present plenty of chances for corley to land those bombs. corely gave cotto hell and cotto is defensively superior to a prime hatton.

 

Hatton made a career out of eating shots to land his own, in his prime Corley doesn't stop him.

I really like Corley and Beeston's right about Hatton's issue with southpaws but I'd have to strongly favour Hatton in this one.

 

Until Hatton's lifestyle caught up with him he was pretty durable.

Not in the Eubank/Woods category or even in the Froch/Calzaghe one, but not far off.

 

Corley could have one-timed him yet Tszyu could barely put a dent in him?

 

Corley would have knocked him out. Ricky had his chance to fight him. But instead of facing him as the mandatory for the WBO which Corley held at the time, Hatton relinquished his position and took an easier fight. That was around 2004 if i recall when Hatton held the prestigious and coveted WBU bauble....Memorys are clearly short in this place...

 

Hatton was Corleys mandatory WBO challenger for a long time and wouldnt take the fight with Corley. Jnr Witter I recall asked Hatton why he wouldnt take the fight and Hatton said you will have to ask my promoter, Corley even said something about Hatton not signing when he was madatory for a long time.
Hatton showed no interest in taking that step up then and stayed for a long time after just fighting WBU fights.

Hatton showed no interest in Corley, Witter or Judah in my opinion and could have fought Corley challenging for his title, but chose to fight WBU fights
