Any version of Cotto at 140 or 147 will always beat Hatton. Hatton just had a name since he defeated Tszyu, which was an ugly fight with a lot of wrestling. Other than that I can't remember Hatton impressing me with a good name opponent. If Collazo had Hatton, imagine what Cotto could've done. Torres needed 20 punches and a push down to put Cotto down and you know what happend after. Even at 140 Cotto was hungry and wanted to make a name for himself and def. would have stop Hatton. Two different levels.

I'll take Hatton at his peak at his best weight over Cotto who still in the final stages of his development and at a weight where he looked weak by that time and was put through hell by a worse fighter than Hatton (Torres). Welterweight would be a different story, Cotto improved alot with the step up. It'd have been a good fight to see around that time.

The fact you have to hope Cotto is drained is evidence of how even the Hatton supporters probably realize this.

Hatton in 2005 was at his peak , and I think second only to Mayweather in the division. The problem with Hatton and longevity is that his technique isnt strong enough . But a peak hatton and his work rate with his underated speed work really be too much for Cotto. I still say this now a green Malignaggi landed more punches on Cotto than a peak Malignaggi did against a post prime Hatton. Now I here you say Malignaggi!!! , but it shows that Cotto was and is always seriously hittable.

In 2005 Hatton wins in a close , but clear decision.

I actually think Hatton wins this, but Cotto is probably the better fighter.

I agree with you. Cotto struggled badly with Corley, also had his problems with Torres and was having trouble to make the weight. Cotto's defense isn't good and was even worse in 2005, because he was also becoming a brawler. 05 Hatton was at his best and relentless pressure was goin to stop Cotto, and my term "easy" refers that it wasn't going to last more than 6 rounds, but both fighters trading a lot.
