Ricky Hatton vs. Paul Malignaggi ~ Analysis Thread

I don't think that there is anything in Paulie's armoury that can trouble Hatton. In order to win, you need to be fast, capable of taking a shot to head and body, prepared to get into a war, and (most importantly) have enough power to back Hatton up or at least obtain his respect.

Ricky looked excellent in the training videos - even jabbing and moving his head, whilst retaining the strengths he previously had. I see it being a fairly cagey encounter early with both men sussing the other out before Hatton starts to take over around the fourth.

Paulie is brave, but for a slick fighter very hittable - N'Dou had many chances to fire in the bodyshots from medium and close range yet didn't. Hatton will keep banging away at the body until the ref jumps in and calls it over.

TKO late - unless Paulie gets on his bike, in which case it will be a wide UD.

 

Im just worried that Paulie is all wrong for Hatton. He will be scoring from range if Hatton hasn't remembered how to move his head!

 

Nah, Hatton will walk him down.

Mayweather was able to score at range because he is much faster than Paulie and crucially has underrated power.

Malignaggi, no disrespect intended, couldn't knock the skin off rice pudding.

 

At first I had my mind made up. Ricky had looked awful against Lazcano. But seeing now some training footage of Ricky I can really see him "boxing" and I don't mean pot shotting, I mean actually trying not to get hit so often, not smothering his punches and applying smart pressure. So right now I'm expecting to see the best Hatton against the best Paulie (lets not forget how well Paulie fought N'dou the first time around). Having that in mind, I'll go for a Hatton via close decision. But I could change my mind... I'll say my definite answer on fight night

 

Unless Hatton has slipped a long way, this will be an easy night's work.

Paulie is very ordinary - if he wasn't a brash New Yorker nobody would know who the hell he was.

 

This time you will see educated pressure.

In a sense, beating Tszyu the way he did was the worst thing for Ricky's career. Ever since, he has gone charging in trying to knock the opponent out in the first round - lunging, throwing allsorts. It was necessary against Tszyu, but not against others and wasn't going to work against Mayweather.

I think you will see him fight as he did against Ben Tackie/Vince Phillips - using angles to open the other guy up and fire in the body shots and straight rights to the head.

 

Actually Paulie is a very good fighter, being able to compete at the highest level of his division and even winning the IBF title with so little power as you clearly state is actually a testament of how skilled he really is. He may talk a lot, but he has a warriors heart, is very fast, athletic, and has shown a good boxing IQ when focused. Hatton beating him is the perfect way to show he's back at the same or even better level he was prior to the Mayweather fight. If Paulie is so underrated, than anything short of a Hatton annihilation would be a clear dissapointment and a testament of how good Hatton isn't.

 

You pretty much described Malignaggi on a good day there:fast,capable of taking shots to the head and body,prepared to go to war etc.This is really a bad match-up for Ricky.If Malignaggi's right hand holds up I think he will pull it off.Malignaggi close UD.

 

hatton should win and i'm sticking my neck out and am gonna have a little bet on round 10 TKO .

 

I think it's at coral you can get 30/1 for hatton in most of the late rounds i'm going put a fiver on each of the 9/10/11 rounds. Defo worth it.

 

Malignaggi isn't that fast though - his hands are pretty quick, but handspeed is only of use when there is something within it.

He doesn't move his body at all to avoid ribshots - never mind quickly.

Hatton has very underrated footwork and his ability to cut off the ring effectively is unmatched currently - Paulie is tough and brave, but won't emerge victorious.

Never underrate Hatton on this one. He only got beaten by the best of the best. I still say Hatton power is not there, he just need to motivate himself.... Paulie? LoLz he needs to go to a saloon.
