Ricky Hatton's underrated performance vs Mayweather

I’m not sure there are 10-15 jr welters ever who beat him, let alone 10-15 guys who were active in his division during his prime.

 

140? You're probably right, he was easily top 5 his entire time in that class. The fact that he needed a gift over Collazo tells me that, at least by that point, he was never a top 5 h2h welter or even close to it, though.

There's a lot of revisionist history about this fight, and also too much made of the ref's intervention which most of the time was to stop Hatton's desire to grapple and make the fight physical without punching his way in.

Overall Hatton did okay, and no shame in his performance, but he got outclassed and eventually schooled...

I need to review that fight. I recall it being close but not a robbery. It was also Hatton’s first fight at 147 and against a big welter who may have taken lightly. He was back to form against Mayweather.

 

I remember thinking it was a very bad decision, as did pretty much everybody in the RBR thread on here (wasn't mine...this was actually still a few months before my join date on the forums, although I was a regular poster on the main page articles on ESB in the comments section)

 

Collazo wasn’t the type of fighter to clearly win rounds and Hatton was worse than advertised on that night.

I was never a fan of Hatton and always a fan of Floyd. I picked for Floyd to win inside the distance and thought he may do it around the 8th round. I did also feel that if there was a style that would trouble Floyd it was Hattons.

I actually thought Hatton was doing well also until the point deduction and that Floyd was shading it but not clearly dominating up to that point.

I think if they had of fought at LWW it may have been even closer as Hatton imo never looked great at WW and could have been close but at WW it favoured Floyd

Never a Hatton fan but agree he gave a good performance that night and don't think the ref breaking the fight every second helped at all. Just watch how the same ref wasn't so quick to break the action in Calzaghe/Hopkins

Hatton gave his all and never stopped trying. Very admirable.
Hattons fast hands and feet were an underrated asset that kept him in the fight for the early part

 

it's a shame he unraveled after the loss I mean he had nothing to be ashamed of given how well he performed

 

This is a huge bump...but just finished watching the fight..just before Mayweather chucked himself through the ropes Hatton landed a huge shot (like the biggest shot he landed throughout the fight - below ) and it was almost like Floyd needed a long breather. Then Cortez came in to help Mayweather out.

My take is, Floyd was somewhere between "rocked" and "hurt" and he took the easy way out. He wasn't truly hurt, but he got stunned. You can kind see it in his face.

The official telecast shows a replay of that first right hand landing at the very end after the fight also, from a different angle.
