It was Rock Newman & Papa Smurf Eddie Futch that nixed the showdown Eddie knew Bowe couldn't beat Lennox he wasn't dedicated. Old Rock just wanted the gravy train to roll on. I'll never forget Rocks face in Dallas that night when he said " Come meet the world HW Champ" I answered him with " Great is Lennox Lewis here too " lol Was the beer talking. I said " Riddick isn't champ till he's beaten Lennox & you know it" Riddick just ignored us & walked away
Probably couldn't understand a goddamn word he was saying, and perhaps wondering if Bowe was going to hit him up for a few bucks.
Apart from that, Tyson and Holyfield are both very generous in praising their opponents , even during their fighting days. Meanwhile Lennox has always came off as arrogant. I remember how he claimed he beat Tyson that still in his prime (seriously ?!!) Although its simply part of his personality, that's the reason why I think Lennox is not popular among sports fans in general, except fans who's really into boxing . Tyson has a roller coaster life which always makes it entertaining for public when he's telling those stories and Tyson can talk about alot of stuff that isnt boxing related while Lennox can only talk about his career. He also says Tyson fans coming up with excuses when he lost to Douglas, yet everytime he losses a fight, he came up with excuses. He said couldnt train properly for Rahman fight cause he's busy shooting a movie and they could only setup a small ring for him to train , he said the air in the arena was too thin... whats up with those excuses ?
You must be referring to the time Lewis was on the Joe Rogan podcast. Hey man, you would be surprised at how arrogant most fighters are. Most athletes in general. There's a fine line between arrogance and confidence and many can't differentiate the two. Couple that with the fact that Lennox Lewis wasn't charismatic, publicly anyway, it's not hard to see why he wasn't appreciated by the casual fan and annoyed people with excuses. Tyson and Ali were probably the most charismatic fighters ever so even when they said outrageous things, people never held it against them. And as you pointed out, Tyson in retirement has shown a lot of humility which resonates with the masses. Lewis, not so much.
