He thought he would probably get a title shot after knocking out a few cans once he found out that nobody cared and he was never going another title shot he quietly went back into retirement. Judging by his physique I don't think he was ever serious about his comeback he just tried to cash in on his name and get a big money fight. Also he looked terrible in his fight against Billy Zumbrun. He was a shell of a shell of his former shelf.
He lost to Billy Zumbrun in 2005. He came back again and fought a can on a Klitschko undercard I think, and looked even worse. And he's brain damaged and has been since 1996. Apart from that, I have no idea why he abandoned it.
There was another fight set up...the guy's name was something like Pulski, or Palaski, or something...and he cancelled due to the money not being right. So I would say that apart from being brain damaged and not serious, he wanted too much for the bum fights. Someone help me out. My memory for names isn't what it was. POST SCRIPT: I have it all wrong. He fought Pukall. But there was another one he pulled out of because of money.
He thought he could regain the magic but then realized he couldn't I remember his comeback on ESPN. He was not even 5% of his prime version.
Yes he did I don't think he landed one punch. I remember him doing interviews in prison saying he was working out and in shape. I figured he'd at least be in decent physical shape. When I saw pics in his 1 first comeback bout with Rhode he was totally out of shape and not taking it seriously. I think he knew the magic was gone by then. Just trying to cash in on his name.
I watched the Zumbrun fight on television at the only restaurant/bar in the tiny town of Young, in the mountains of Arizona, 47 miles on dirt roads from Globe, the nearest town. Cold beer and a terrific hamburger. If you have seen that fight you will understand exactly why his comeback went nowhere.
If I remember rightly he didn't even weigh in for the Rhode fight. They just announced a made up weight because he was too fat to weigh in.
