Agreed. I've said this for some time, Bowe was the most naturally talented HW since Ali. It is truly a shame that he did not apply those abilities for very long. Had he, imo, he would be regarded as easily the best HW since Ali.
Bowe-Tyson: Offense - Tyson Defense - Tyson Handpeed - Tyson Explosiveness - Tyson Power - Tyson Chin - Even Stamina - Bowe Skills - Tyson Size - Bowe Strength - Bowe H2H ability, prime Tyson was clearly above him. Except for size, Tyson beats him in every department. Even in the case of stamina we are not sure as a prime Tyson was never pushed that far. As for Bowe-LL. Lennox already beat him. Sure it was amateurs but it wasnt like Lewis beat him in an amateurish way of scoring points, he just finished him. Bowe didnt want a repeat in the pro's.
Bowe had a lot of heart once he stepped in the ring. His training habits, and willingness (or his management's) to fight Lewis, that's a different story.
I think Bowe could give Tyson hell, because Bowe was terrific on the inside and had that great uppercut, a punch Tyson was always suspectible to. But Bowe's instinct was to brawl, and he got hit too much. I think despite his stoppage losses, Tyson showed his chin more against big punchers. Tyson took some hard shots from a big puncher in Ruddock and took them well. Shot Tyson took bombs from Lewis until finally going in 8. Bowe was more likely to be hurt from one shot than Tyson.
A couple of things that need to be addressed here. First of all, the fact that Bowe chose never to fight Lewis, is telling of his worth as a champion. Additionally, he fought Jesse Ferguson and Michael Dokes, when there were several challengers out there who were far more qualified. Secondly, the very notion that Bowe would have beaten Tyson, Lewis or anyone else whom he didn't fight, is purely speculative. We can't award wins for fights that never happened. Third, Just because he may have been a top player in the 90's, does not automatically grant him a spot in the top 3. Even if he had beaten Lewis and Tyson, boxing is a sport that has accumulated over 100 years of history with many great champions. Bowe's resume is very good, but their are a number of champions, who's credentials are considerably better...
assuming Bowe was ducking Lewis and Lewis destoyed Golota, top 3 ALG should be as follow: 1. Lewis 2. Golota 3. Bowe
In hindsight, he doesn't come off as too good. But at the time, make no mistake he was seen as err the real deal, here in the UK. People had a higher viewing of Bowe then they did Lewis; in retrospect that may have been unfair. The British public, adored Bruno, at the time didnt warm to Lewis. Bowes stock with time has gone down considerably from what he was once viewed.
I think it was more like Bowes people wanted to protect thier investment by steering him away from a potentially dangerous match with Lewis (Bowe wasn't scared personally) but did know how good Lewis was... Bowe may or may not have been able to handle Lennox, but he sure ruined every chance of them ever meeting with his 1992 publicity stunt of throwing the belt in the trash...... Bowe was an exceptional heavyweight.. and to this day he only ever lost 1 fight. (Holyfield 2)
Joe Louis Jack Johnson Muhammed Ali George Foreman Rocky Marciano I don't see him breaking my top five. I think Bowe had the potential for top fifteen ever; top ten would still be tough with the likes of Frazier, Tyson, Patterson, Holmes, and Lennox Lewis.
