Riddick Bowe could have been a top 3 ATG.

One loss, but twice he looked thoroughly punished against Andrew.

Nope, Bowe was a carefully managed heavyweight. Bowe avoided all big heavies and when he faced any big not named Jorge, Bowe was owned.

Exactly. People make all sorts of assumptions about his mindset without any facts to back it up. Fights aren't made all the time, and it usually has to do with MONEY and boxing POLITICS, as it did in the case of Bowe-Lewis.

Bowe is the fighter that Americans tend to overrate the most.

Many Americans that saw the Holyfield fights are so emotionally tied up in the imaginary effect of beating post-Tyson Evander that they don't think clearly.

In reality he was a big heavy fighter that was average against guys his own size and up. He (of course) could be competitive with smaller guys.

Bowe has one name on his resumed - ONE. And that is little Evander... Golota showed that Bowe would have gotten a royal beating if he had meet any good boxer like Lennox Lewis (just like he did the first time they met).

Rock Newman and Bowe wanted no part of Lennox Lewis. Giving up the WBC belt rather that take on LL dented his credibility big time.

Two things to remember. One, Bowe gave a prime time unbeaten Holyfield his first loss. I feel like a focused in shape Bowe,is trouble for any heavy of any era. Also, I thought he was the best in fighting tall heavweight of them all. He tore Holy up inside, nice cross armed defense, nice short uppercut, great left hook underneath. He learned from the master himself, the unparelled Eddie Futch... He might have had the right style to beat Lewis. Put that on the greatest fights never seen list...

Holyfield was completly tailor made for Bowe. You couldn't POSSIBLY choose an ATG whose style/weaknesses were more made for Bowe than Holyfield.

Holyfield doesn't have enough power to outslug Bowe, instead of using his skill to outbox Bowe (he did in the 2nd fight) he tried to outslug him which when you are Holyfields size is impossible against a quality Superheavyweight. Bowe loses to the great punchers due to his terrible defense, and the best pure boxers outjab him all night because he was too much an inside fighter.

Even if you want to completely discount the Golota fights, Tony Tubbs also showed what happens when Bowes in with a fighter with a good jab and skills. Tubbs was old and past it and still nearly took the decision.

Believe it or not, when i think about Bowe, the first fight that pops up in my mind is his battle against Jorge Luis Gonzales. The pre fight hype was quite immense, mostly because of Gonzales talking **** about Bowe's family. Gonzales was unbeaten with 23-0 and had 22kos and was regarded by many as the next big thing. And when im not mistaken, i think he beat Bowe in the amateurs. So i was really hyped about this fight. But boy, did Gonzales take a beating in this one. Gonzales turned out to be a totally chump at the pros. He couldnt do **** against Bowe who was, cause of the insults on his family, motivated like hell. Gonzales went on to journeyman status and couldnt even get past Purrity oder Couser. What a career :)

About Bowe: I think he had the talent to do better, but he lacked the mentality and the willingness to dedicate himself to boxing. He was a champion in the 90's and didnt fight Lewis and Tyson. You cannot be ATG anyway with this resume.

Did you guys know Bowe will fight again on 9-12-08? Boxrec says so. The guy he fights is older than him, so age wont be a factor:nut

You put on a good analyse of Bowe. He really mastered the right uppercut/left hook combo on the inside. He did learn a lot subtle things form the old master Futch.

I would give him a real chance in mythical matchups against prime Tyson and Lewis.

Tyson, and Lewis are along with Liston terrible matchups for Bowe.

I think differently. I do not know if he can beat a prime Tyson but with his solid chin and good infight skills he would give him a tough competitive fight. I favor lightly Tyson in this one

I can see a focused and in shape Bowe knocking out Lewis with an overhand right.

Bowes defense was simply too bad for him to take out ATG fighters with power. Bowe trading with Tyson would be the end of him, and Lewis would keep him on the end of his jab, nail him with rights all day and finish him off in the mid to late rounds.

Bowe has a punchers chance but Lewis when against fighters he deemed as threatening was incredibly hard to catch with hard shots. And he was only dropped twice in his entire career.
