Are boxers among the worst athletes dealing with their personal finances? Are there any numbers comparing personal bankruptcies among professional sports millionaires e.g. from baseball vs. basketball vs. football vs. boxing? Would be interesting to compare.
There's been some stories lately about NBA players losing lots of money and having financial problems. Antoine Walker, Scottie Pippen, Kenny Anderson. Some report said 60% of the NBA players end up broke within a few years, something to that extent. I'm not sure though if that's also including guys who just sign really short, 10-day contracts and then go back overseas or to the CBA or NBDL. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1153364/index.htm
This is pretty inexcusable for 'big league' sports. They should council these guys and help them set up plans. Boxers seem to be surrounded by shady characters too often. Many come from a 'bad' background to start with. Pavlik claims to have already made sure his wife and kids will be set for life. (I hope he has trusted the right people to help him do this) How many can say the same?
A few posts back I read about earning $15M in his career? I thought it was a hell of a lot more. I remember him making some multi fight TV deal in the early 90's, and getting as much as $100M for it. Or am I wrong about that?
thats because he lost his pin code for the atm machine and doesnt know how to write checks...and all he really wanted to buy was an authentic police badge anyway
The contract was for a potential 100M if it was fufilled against the projected fighters they wanted him to face, Holyfield Lewis Tyson. Bowe made far more than 15M in his career for sure.
Do you really think he got most of his money robbed by one of his financial advisors? I dobut it. Maybe a little but not a lot. I think he just blew most of it. A black, uneducated kid coming out of the ghetto with no idea of how to take care of his money and just didn't have the common sense to look ahead. Sad.
and he had to pay taxes, training fees for the camp/trainer/menager/sparing partners probably get less then half of it into account
Just think about it. If you make $50K a year for 20 straight years, that equals $1 million. And i think a lot of people would be very contempt with that salary. This guy makes $15 million and blows it all within 15 years. You've got to be a freaken idiot to do that. I feel bad for someone like Meldrick Taylor, who received a fate which was beyond his control but i have no sympathy for guys who blow millions due to stupidity.
