Gonzalez peaked as an amateur and pretty much coasted as a pro. Dedication was not in his vocabulary at that point. Damn, I hated watching him beat up an old Snipes.

Bruno tried his very best to lose, it was just that McCall was that inept.

    Agreed.

I dont think he peaked as an amatuer as much as he didnt grow into a pro. He never hired a qualified trainer and worked out with a guy holding mitts in a weight lifting gym. He basically trained himself while Bowe was growing under Eddie Futch. I dont know that Gonzo would have ever been a great pro, but he was tall powerful and did have some boxing skills, he was just completely lost on the inside and when Bowe took it to him, he just took a nasty beating.

I thought he fought him twice? Once in the Pan American games where he won a decision and once in the regular amatuers where he stopped him?

I thought it was twice, too.

I dunno, still say he peaked as an am... or was all that cigar smoking, rum drinking just a ruse? He never looked to be in that great of shape and certainly got lost on the inside as you mentioned. Oh well, if his ******* persona was just ballyhoo it worked on me.
