One of the top five or six jabs in heavy history...watch his use of it before the first Holy fight to see the incredible potential Futch had on his hands. Had Bowe tried harder to not get hit and listen to Papa Smurf, he would have ultimately slotted in the top six or seven ATGs in the division imo.
Absolute monstrosity of a post, Bowe was very good at tracking down heads and landing his jab consistently . His stiff jab was better as an offensive and intimidation tool than Lennox but not as much as a setup punch, didn't double up too often on it and when he did you knew that big right hand was coming behind.
Holy was able to neutralize Bowe`s jab in their rematch by using an active guard because Bowe didn`t set his jabs up with feints so they were easy to predict, look how Hagler feinted with his lead hand and then jabbed.
Mark, each fighters jab has his own qualities, Liston never had a really versatile jab but it was rangy and powerful despite lacking speed. Lewis's jab on the other hand is versatile and more unpredictable, he uses a lot of angles to create holes in each of his opponents guard. Norton's jab is awkward. many boxers including Ali had hard time reading it becuz he jabs from the waist and also had a great sense of timing. The fact that Bowe does not use that much feints in his jab does mean it's terrible and saying that Holyfield was able neutralise his jab on the rematch certainly does not mean Bowe has a bad jab. Holyfield is the smart one to put up a excellent gameplan against Bowe similar how Norton did to his first fight with Ali. Lastly, Mark can I ask you a question? Do you hate Bowe? I'm sorry if this bothers you, but when Bowe landed his jabs effortlessly against his opponents you feel his opponents lack defense instead of Bowe's great jab. When Holyfield neutralised Bowe's jab, you feel that Bowe's jab is bad and weak instead of Holyfield's high iq and gameplan to neutralise Bowe's jab.
Bowe was simply big, fast and powerful, his fundamentals were bad, the only good opponents he fought had speed, just like most fighters in the 90`s. Bowe`s jab was just long and he threw it a lot with a lot of other shots, there`s was nothing special about it other than his handspeed.
