Exactly my thoughts... I saw this crap live... Am I really that old to be able to say, this stuff is older than ****, and has nothing to do with nothing????
i thought that as well...when he goes for the right he looks to be really unsteady when he launches it...i thikn the othe rguy pulled him up a bit. what was with hbo and making bowe a big cuddly bear type guy he was a vicious brooklyn ghetto child (running wild). who had flashes of niceness...if it was th eother way round he would of been far more appealing. and another thing what happend to rock neuman....disappeared of the face off the earth. he was the one i remember who told bowe to drop the belt for promosional perperses
I know during the second Golata fight the HBO announcers were saying that Rock kept saying that if Bowe retired so would he. Does anyone know if he stuck to that? I saw him a few months back, I thyink on ESPN, where they had him as a guest when they were talking about boxing, and I know that was the first time I'd seen him in years. Regarding Bowe being marketed as a teddy bear: I think that was Rock's idea of how to market him, one because it would get people on Bowe's side from the start and keep positive attention on him regardless of how individual fights might go, and second because it would become much easier to land good endorsements and such that way. (And for most athletes, they will make more more off an endorsement deal or two than they will directly from their sport). Problem is that Bowe could act the part at times, but the longer the public attention was focused on him when he was at the top, the more that image cracked.
I noticed a massive change in bowe.. I met him in 1991 he was a big affable , lovely giant who had time for anyone.. he would sign pictures and hug kids .. true gent .. very giving.. Then i sat with him before he boxed Hide in Vegas at the MGM.. he was petulant, mouthy, harsh.. and quite an anti social guy.. he told an autograph hunter to **** off because he asked for a picture signed more than once.. The transformation was actually striking.. I was with a friend a while ago and he had a pic with Bowe from back in 1990.. he described that photo as .. "Oh that is me and Riddick Bowe before he became an *******.. " i said , did you notice too? he said yes.. he just switched into a monster , i hate his attitude now..
I've always had the feeling that Bowe is one of those people that is extremely generous and friendly to his friends, and a bit of a right sulky ******* to everyone else. Re. the near Bowe-Lewis punchup. This was the one right after Holyfield-Bowe I, right? If so, I read that Lewis forced himself to calm down and not do anything because, after Bowe had gone 12 hard rounds with Holyfield in a great fight, punching the guy in the face right afterwards would've made Lewis look like an opportunistic jerk instead. Lewis's mood was not helped by Bowe taking some verbal shots at Lewis's mother afterwards. Cheap of Bowe to do that...wasn't the last time either.
Damon you are right on all accounts.. He is sulky... Lennox did hold back, and Bowe attacked his mother, and manager just after the Holyfield fight.. Bowe was very petulant after that win, he wanted to vent on all the people who said he was lazy and would never amount to becoming anything. Quote.. Holding up his newly aquired belts.. "Shelley Finkle, Butch Lewis, look what i have here, y'all bums, y'all fools, i am the man , i am the champ... aaahhhhh" Had some serious anger issues.. His upbringing was seriously hard though, i do know that for a fact...
Didn't the gang that ran his neighborhood leave a dead body in Bowe's families hallway as a warning to get the **** out and never come back? Something unbelievable like that.
