Riddick Bowe v Foreman and Holmes 1992

It was pretty basic, not that great. Most big guys dont move when they punch-Their reach makes them lazy to fundamental preventative head movement. Bowe also was terrible with keeping his hands up, fought on adrenaline and anger, and was a tremendous finisher, which had the negative side effect of him rushing you whenever he thought he smelled blood.

He was an offensive dynamo, but his defensive liabilities are glaring. Lesser fighters like Biggs and Tubbs outboxed him for stretches just on the basis of being able to hit him when they punched.

Granted he was a threshing machine when he had your measure, and I failed to overcome him when it counts. I feel bad criticizing a guy who beat me decisively. But he had flaws, I just lacked the talent and the know how to take advantage. I came into my own years after my shot at Riddick and the Olympics.

I'd favour Bowe against Foreman, but the fact that he was there to be hit makes it interesting. Bowe wouldn't circle him or move in and out like the guys who beat him most often did, he'd be right in there with him. That will always be risky against George. Bowe would probably win, but this fight could possibly ruin them both.

 

It's cool, I don't see it as criticism. Everyone has flaws, and great and exciting as Bowe was it's clear that defence wasn't his forte.

 

I suppose Foreman's strength must have been something out of the ordinary?

 

The Tm says a 92 version of Bowe... Bowe didnt start slacking on training until after the Holyfield triology.. Were not talking about the Bowe who fought Golota, but the inshape and very talented Bowe that beat Holy 2our of 3 times.. Even back then Foreman wanted no part of Bowe... And Holmes at the time while still very crafty fought in spurts he wouldnt be able too School Bowe like he did an out of shape Mercer..... Bowe through a lot of punches and Packed a big punch to go along with his excellent skills(jab).. Alot of the poster have a short term memory on this thread, i dont remember anyone ever picking a 90s Foreman and Holmes over Bowe. Old Larry couldnt even take a lazy Olver McCall ,what makes them think hes beating a prime in shape Riddick Bowe? Foremans face looked horrid against the mediocre Stewart, Got outboxed by Morrison, and was getting whupped by Moore before landing a big one on the fragile chinned Moore... What makes people think hes beating Bowe? Bowe had a good chin hes not going out like that,he would have hurt Big George.

His basic flaw rises to the surface earlier is all. He is not going to get himself in razor sharp condition for 2 guys in their 40's. Bowe will not prepare for these guys the way he would have for Evander. But Holmes and foreman will prepare for a guy with a leaky defense they do not have to break down or chase to land punches. And I sure was not all that impressed by Bowe in the 2nd Holyfield fight and he'd slipped some by then.
