Theoretically, aren't we supposed to be matching both guys up from their career best performane or performances? Bowe at his best can't match the Douglas of that night in 1990 in Tokyo. To hell withe the out-of-shape Buster of the past, it's the Tyson version of Buster that counts here, and Bowe would be outclassed.
Riddick Bowe came across as big, friendly, and lovable; but deep down there is very much a mean streak. Larry Donald witnessed it while standing beside Bowe at a podium. Jorge Louis Gonzalez felt the ice water in the glass container breeze by his head at one of their press conferences. Riddick Bowe was a big man, that liked to fight. That's why he wanted to be on the inside where he could let his hands go. Bowe had tons of heart. He proved that against Holyfield, and especially against Golota the 2nd time around. Bowe's weakness was his outside game. His jab was decent, but it was a little sloppy. I don't know how to say it other than it had some extra motion to it. It was not straight to the point. That is why a smaller fighter like Holyfield out jabbed him at times. Golota out jabbed him as well. I believe Douglas would have out jabbed him, and out maneuver Bowe as well. My only problem with Douglas is his will to win. Bowe would keep coming all night long, win or lose. I'll pick Douglas by UD, but I have no problem with people picking Bowe by late stoppage. Douglas may even quit on his stool while leading by 5 points going into the last couple of rounds.
Muchmoore, while you bring up good points about bowes struggle with jabs vs tubbs, you fail to mention douglas struggle with stamina late in fights. Mike the Giant white lost every round of the fight until he stopped an exhausted douglas late, and tucker behind on points stopped douglas late. I think bowes workrate will break douglas
Douglas had a problem with stamina because he was usually mentally weak and couldn't close the deal, as well as showing up out of shape. Against Tucker, he all of a sudden pretty much gave up and let Tucker unload on him. The Douglas that fought Tyson was in great shape, evident in his performance in the 10th round when he finished him off. He was intent on getting the win at whatever cost that night.
Douglas was sporatic and never in great shape he lost a few to THE BETTER FIGHTERS but the night he fought Tyson that Douglas could have beaten Bowe but he was usually less focused
buster douglas jab was great if not very very good, buster like many of the 80's heavyweights (tubbs, page, thomas, dokes, witherspoon) had certain natural talents that where on par with great fighters, they just dident have the consistancy, conditioning and longevity of great fighters. i think a prime douglas may lose to bowe because bowe is just bigger and stronger the tyson. he will lean in on douglas, throw hard uppercuts and left hooks inside, use his strength to rake douglas on the ropes and create a completely different boxing match then against tyson. i also think a prime tyson would beat bowe. but bowes style against buster determines the outcome.
I think the footwork of Bowe is a big problem in this matchup. He's a plodder, at best, at is far more effective against smaller & immobile guys he doesn't have to chase down. He couldn't even land all that much on a novice fighter in Donald & nobody was picking Larry to win that one. Douglas will punch and move and Bowe will punch and stand there. Or, with that Bowe defense, stand there and get hit and then be forced to go after a moving target. Bowe doesn't cut off the ring and just follows guys around, so I see a jabber like Douglas turning him allnight.
Buster was amazing in Tokyo, but would he be able to get away with the stuff he did with tyson against Bowe? The best version of Bowe is much better than the poor version of Tyson. Bowes also bigger and has a longer reach (than Tyson) On a seperate note, Tyson ****s Bowe up
