Better than Dempsey would. I think Dempsey gets severely overrated by some. He was not a polished fighter but rather crude and wild at times. He is not in the class of fighter than Riddick Bowe is.
I think you judge dempsey when hes trying to put people away "a la highlight reel" .everyone is crude going in for the finish, istinct kicks in and it is crude. how crude did tyson look trying to put away holmes or thomas? the point is dempsey had a lot of moves. study his footing and rolling before he caught willard. thats polished.
The Tommy Gibbons fight is a good one to study Dempsey's style. Even though Dempsey was past his best, it shows a lot of how he fought, and it shows that Dempsey wasn't just a crude face-first "swarmer". He uses mostly lateral movement, stays up on his toes all night, and often comes in behind the jab - he outboxes Gibbons even when he's attempting to kill him. His favourite tactics are inside hooks in the clinches, lots of savagery combined with lots of skill. Dempsey is remarkably agile. And this was after a 2 year layoff ! wonderful post. all I can add is that even though it has been said before dempsey was like a heavyweight duran. I remember reading ray arcel explaining that fighters like duran had something i think he called "ring sence" a natural atribute and instinct to know what to do natutraly. Dempsey was the same. people forget how good gibons was. tommy was the first guy to KO willie mehan in 123 fights -neither dempsey, wills or greb did that.
I could not disagree more! Dempsey has a far better style for overcoming a size disadvantage, regardless of who was better overall!
I actually wouldn' count out dempsey on this one. Jack was a animal. But like someone previously said if jack lived in the modern day and age with modern day nutrition he would have feasibly beat any man alive.
