As we assume best of each version, I'm taking the Bowe from Holy 1. He trained hard for that one, was focused and a fit and ready 235. Bowe wins everything at range with his great jab and crisp combos. O'Brien was able to land his jab at will against Johnson. Bowe will seem like a space alien to Jack with his long, crisp and schooled jab. And Bowe will ultimately relent to the inside stuff. Jack will try to stifle him with some success. But Bowe will win the battle there, too. He was strong and could turn his punches inside with great accuracy.

A stoppage in 10 with Johnson offering a fair amount of resistance but not having a deep enough tool bag for a modern schooled fighter.

My problem with Johnson in head to head matches is defining the peak version of Johnson to pit against another fighter. When was this and how do we know it? His best names were Langford and McVea and Jeanette, guys he fought either way outside the heavyweight class or very early in their and his career. Is that peak heavyweight Johnson? Then we have Tommy Burns but what modern heavy wouldn't finish that chap in a few rounds? Can we really gauge his head to head abilities in reference to his performance against a midget? And we have the shell of Jeffries where the same argument can be made as for Burns, except we talking rust, inactivity and age rather than size.

You make it sound like Bowe was better than O'Brien

Given how the fight looks on the film, I wouldn't take too much from that KD. Johnson really toyed with him and didn't allow Ketchel to go down. In reality, that was exibition, not real fight. Even if Stanley didn't care :)

I rate Johnson higher than most, but honestly, I have a hard time seeing him win this one.

Johnson didn't have a great style for beating larger opponents.

I'm not making a pick but O Brien did not land jhis jab at will accortding to contemporary reports, neither did he win.Since you mentioned it is the best version of both its worth mentioning that Johnson was fat and untrained for the OBrien fight.Possibly similar to Bowe v Golota?
