Riddick Bowe vs Lennox Lewis 1993 (Steve Bunce)

    I was watching setanta last weekend. And Steve Bunce said that he liked Riddick Bowe. He said he was a brilliant heavyweight, and that he's going to get a lot of emails over this but
    What the fook is Bunce going on about?

    Or I'm I missundestanding the point here. I thought Lennox was chasing after Riddick Bowe, but Bowe refused to fight Lewis and that's why he threw his belt away... in the bin" So it was BOWE who ignored Lewis. Isn't Bunce contradicting himself here and talking cr@p?.

    I also watched Bowe fight last weekend and one commentator said..... "Lewis beat Bowe in 2 rounds at the Olympics....Is that why you think Bowe didn't want to fight Lewis"...... And the other guy said "Well Bowe wanted to fight lewis, but Lewis didn't want anything to do with him".


    Could someone clear this up for me. I always thought it was Bowe who didn't want to fight. I can vividly remember Lewis saying to Bowe after he beat Holyfield "Bring it on, I'm going to knock you out". And Bowe walking away saying "I will bring it on". And I can also remember Bowe throwing his belt in the bin at a press conference.

    Bowe and rock newman were trying to wait it out. After a year or two, both guys would have made some good defences and the world would be screaming for a unification bout.
    and here we are talking biiiiiiggg numbers.

    Lewis and maloney on the other hand didnt exactly look to hungry either, outside the publicity stunts. maloney offered bowe a whopping 3 million dollars for a fight with lewis in 93. with time and succesfull defences these guys could have made 20 million each. maloney knew this, and he knew newman and bowe would turn it down.

    so they waited defended their titles a couple of time, but instead of a unification bout, lewis crashed against mccall, and bowe against holyfield.

    when lewis gained the title back in 97 bowe was washed up and humiliated by golota.and later that year did the right thing and retired......

    so there you have it... if these two guys really wanted to smash each other, the fight would have happened, money, politics and career planning promotors blocked us the fans for what probably would have been a mouthwatering battle between two of the most gifted heavies of their generation.

    Mae what you want from Buncey's comments. Whatever way us fans look at this, in 1993, Bowe was a much more developed fighter than Lewis was at that time. If they fought in 1993, Bowe would have been too good for Lennox.

    :rofl would have been too good....yet he embarrassed himself by dumping his wbc belt & passed on the huge payday to defend against two bums instead.
