Marciano's best chance here would be against Vitali, he'd perhaps have a shout at a stoppage win. I think that Marciano would have more of a chance against Bowe than he would against a peak Lewis, however I still can't see him beating Bowe.
At his best? No, I can't see marciano losing to a man like Moorer. Holyfield however, would not lose to Moorer at his best either. The fact is, he was very off his game that night.
Pick Marciano on an off night if you want like the Cockle fight. There is still no way he looses to Moorer.
Those who pick Bowe here are overlooking two important things. A. Impresive though the Holyfield win his reputation esentialy hangs on this one oponent. B. Bowe fought verry few punchers and on the ocasions he did they took him to the brink of disaster. Marciano would take him over it. Some people think Lewis Bowe would have been a competitive fight. I don't.
How is Bowe going to uppercut a man of 5' 11'' fighting out of a crouch? When it comes down to that particular game the little guy really is king and if he has knockout power then Bowe could be bang in trouble.
If that is the case, then Marciano would barely land a head punch, as his reach is not enough. The 6'5" Bowe would be out of reach if Marciano was crouching. When he isn't, then Bowe lands uppercuts. And Marciano is a stylistic nightmare for Moorer. I do believe a fighter of Moorer's calibre, but with a different style, could beat Marciano, though. It's just wrong for him, like Tua was.
I don't want to stir the pot, but I have a hard time seeing Bowe doing any worse than Walcott, Moore or Lastarza. I don't say this because I think Bowe is better than those guys, but he would definately have size, strength and youth going into that fight, wheras the others didn't. I won't try to candy cote Bowe's career, by building up his opposition, but we have to look at the fact that he beat many ranked young fighters who were very strong and athletic such as Holyfield, Coetzer, Seldon, Hide, Donald, Gonzalez and Mathis. Bowe never defeated anyone with the legacies of Walcott, Louis, Moore or Charles, but at least the men he beat were in their primes and bore the resemblance of modern heavyweights with possibly stronger physical abilities. Neither Bowe nor Marciano were ever knocked out, but both were floored, hurt and taken the distance. Bowe was battered by Andrew Golata, wheras Marciano was nearly beaten by Joe Walcott. The difference is that Bowe was past his prime against a youthful Golata, as opposed to Marciano who was at his peak against an aging Walcott. I can't see Marciano knocking out Riddick Bowe, given that he was never stopped and took shots from fighters who were considerably larger and stronger than Rocky. I also can't see Rocky out boxing or out slugging Bowe for 12 or 15 rounds enroute to a decision. Marciano will always be higher on my all time list than Bowe, but head to head, I'd pick Riddick.
Why don't you make this a more fair matchup like Marciano vs. Norton or Marciano v. Tim Witherspoon. Bowe had too much of an advantage.
Marciano isn't beating Riddick Bowe. Has nothing to do with all-time rankings or who beat more hall of famers. It also has nothing to do with Riddick's short prime, or whatever you want to call it. When I watch the Bowe from Bowe-Holy I and than watch Marciano from whichever performances you want to call his best. Be it Moore, Charles, Walcott, or any other of his filmed fights I just can't see Marciano winning this one. A lot of people want to act like size isn't much of an issue, but in a large number of instances it is, and this is one of them. I wonder how many who say Marciano would overcome this size differences would hold the same stance if Marciano was the bigger man. The difference in size between Bowe-Marciano would be simiar to Marciano being in the ring with a welter or jr middleweight. How many would give any guy that size a chance against Marciano? Even if the smaller guy had an obvious skill advantage over Rocky. So due to a lot of size and strength difference and being a skilled guy himself I see Bowe stopping Marciano.
Bowe at his best (HolyfieldI) probably has enough to deal with Marciano. The size (45lbs) being too much for Marciano to conquer; but you know he will not make it easy for Bowe... Bowe to floor Marciano early, lead fairly comfortable and bust up Marciano pretty good for 10 rounds. Only for the Brockton Blockbuster to come back strong, torturing the desperately tired Big Daddy late. Bowe hangs on (literally) to win; just! Bowe WM15 143/141
