Bowe vs Carnera Max Baer Max Schmeling Jim Braddock Tony Galento Jack Sharkey Does Bowe make it past this Murderers Row undefeated?
Very cool matchups here. I think Bowe would get through undefeated, maybe with a Foreman v Lyle style slugfest with Baer and Schmeling maybe lasting and landing some good punches. I don't think anyone else from the list would be very competitive.
Can I have more context? Is this Bowe undertaking a career in the 1930’s, & facing these men over consecutive years, or him on the night he decisioned Holyfield in one-off fantasy outings?
Bowe is a conundrum he looks good on film but his resume is actually pretty poor. He was a classic Bully and yet he showed heart. He was a dirty fighter and yet won his last meaningful fights the victim of blatant fouls. His record of 40-1 looks stellar but doesn’t tell the whole story. He should have been Dq’d against Mathis, and that was the original call before being overruled. He arguably should have lost both fights to Golota. He was badly hurt against Holyfield in their 3rd fight when Holyfield looked exhausted yet again during that period of his career and couldn’t finish him. Bowe looked like a world beater against Holyfield in the first fight and against Gonzalez and Seldon and some other B level guys. I don’t think he makes it through that group without a loss. In particular style wise I think Sharkey gives him problems. Sharkey had great head movement an excellent jab and solid movement. Golota took Bowe apart with those attributes, and Mathis on head movement alone frustrated Bowe to the point he could have gotten the DQ win. Sharkey did beat Wills, Primo and Godfrey. Guys in the 220 range and Primo probably over 250. Style wise I think Bowe struggles. And I don’t think Bowe was consistent enough to run the table of those names. He wasn’t Louis.
