i saw this clip for the first time earlier this morning when a friend of mine emailed it to me with the subject line, 'remember when larry merchant said riddick bowe was one of the great boxing tragedies of the modern era? this looks worse even than a great boxing tragedy.'

i'm glad someone posted this as a point of reference the next time there is any debate about whether or not bowe should be licensed the next time he tries a comeback. i know the man's broke...and i know the only thing in this world he knows how to do is fight...but what is there to do when a fighter who has been nearly disabled by boxing says all he can do to live is box more, take more punishment? it's a part of the sport, that these things happen, i know, but...it doesn't get any easier to watch.

i have seen, we all have seen, many journeymen opponents go from capable fall guy to wobbly tomato can and seen many world class, elite fighters go from the top of the world to a state of hapless and complete disrepair. it's an awful thing...but it's seems even worse a tragedy when a guy is naive and somewhat simple by nature (not because of too many punches) and is then manipulated greedily and massively by the people around him into such a sad state.

His brain was porridge the moment he lost in the Olympic final.

What a waste of a career - fighting bums most of the time, fighting at press conferences, throwing glasses at people. What a joke.

Obviously bowe and his trainer weren't really fighting and it's for charity so don't know how 'sad' this is. it is sad that bowe appears to want to fight on at this stage and he is probably basically broke. for his health, i wish bowe would try and learn a trade or something and if he is halfway decent at something i'm sure someone would hire him. bowe really probably shouldn't take anymore shots to the head.

Yes, it was a fixed charity deal, but in all reality, Bowe doesn't have all that much more to offer in a real fight. Big Daddy has been one of my favorite fighters for years, and I support him in most things, including a money comeback if he is that desperate, but this is sad.

Ripcity-A great fighter like Bowe who could have gone so much farther had he the dedication required, subjected to charity events like this (not that charity events are bad, just that in a real fight, he no longer has much else to offer).
