There were different circumstances happening at that time. Holyfield was obviously the huge money maker for him, so that was top priority.

Bowe's manager wanted to milk everything he could get out of his meal ticket and didn't want to risk that.

Although I do think that Bowe had it all over Lewis skill-wise and should have taken him apart, (what McCall did is exactly what Bowe should have done to him IMO), I do think mentally, Lewis made Bowe uncomfortable, (maybe?). I don't know this for sure.

In 1992 or '93, I go with Bowe to beat Lewis as I don't think Lewis was ready. If it's 1996, then I think Lewis may have had a chance to win because at that point Bowe was on the slide.

I agree with all this, though I think Lewis could have beaten Bowe as early as 94.

I blame two parties for the fight not happening: Newman for coming up with the terrible idea of trashing the belt, and Bowe for being dumb enough to do it. I was a big fan of Bowe back in the day, was very impressed seeing him brutally stop Tillery live. But even I thought that was a horrible slap in the face to boxing. That is a greatly esteemed belt he pitched away.
