This has been done to death and it’s all politics, nothing more Bowe wasn’t scared of Lewis and Lewis wasn’t scared of Bowe watch Rummy’s video on it for an idea of what went on.
That is the guy I remember Rock Newman. Always a troublemaker and willing to cause a melee for publicity. I agree. I remember that Lennox stood right up to him. Lennox knew he would knock out Bowe. There was just feeling to it and Bowe seemed to think so also.
Everyone knows Andy morally beat Bowe twice in a row and ended his career. And stopping Doc Nicholson in an HBO main event of "Night of the Young Heavyweights" was meaningful. Golota was is a Polish National Hero. Means the same to his people what Chavez in Mexico and Calzaghe in Wales. Andrew didn't deal well with pressure but everyone knows he was a menace in the ring. Guys in the gym were afraid. Let me spell it out for you: Golota is a sports legend in PL whose talent will always be respected in boxing history. And his Polish fans were equally menacing: during one of his fights at the Garden they even went after the U.S. Marines.
I must be blind, because I've watched that Bowe Lewis post-Holyfield I confrontation over and over and NEITHER man looked scared in the least. Newman was pulling on Bowe to try to get him away, and then jumped in between. I saw absolutely no fear in Bowe's eyes whatsoever. No offense, @ETM , I'm an admirer of many of your posts but I must have vision problems. Do you also feel the Bowe/Lewis stoppage in the Olympics was warranted, not too quick? Not being facetious in the least, my friend.
Ok....lets just start with what did happen. Bowe is ringside in Lewis's face cause he wants a piece of him. He's jacked up from the fight he just won. Lennox is in a suit commentating, relaxed but Bowe pressed the confrontation because "Lennox I owe you one" that's Bowe's exact words. "Razor Ruddock was afraid of you!" Maybe Bowe knew the feeling and could relate. Then what happened? Bowe throws part of his title in a garbage can. Just the belt that was pressing him to fight Lennox Lewis. Bowe suddenly decides the WBC is corrupt? He later fights for that same belt!!! Why is this even a debate? Plain as day the man punked out. Lennox Lewis stood ringside after their confrontation and said to Jim Lamp!ey, " Lets hope he doesn't duck me, lets hope I don't have to call him Chicken Bowe" He was questioning Riddick Bowe's courage right there. Its all on video. He knew Bowe and Riddick proved him 100% right. No offense brother but pick another boxer to defend this time. When I say he was scared , I don't think Bowe was scared of getting punched in the face..... More like a repeat of the Olympics. To be defeated and owned by the same msn twice. It wasn't politics. Bowe's the one who interjected the politics as a smokescreen. Did the WBC become squeaky clean a couple of years later?
I think when you take it in the proper perspective it was a normal stoppage for amateur boxing. When we view it now as mostly pro boxing fans from the standard of a pro fight it would be quick but there have even been stoppages that quick or quicker in the professional ranks. Bowe was in trouble no question. The ball was in Riddick Bowe's corner in 1992. He could have proven it was a bad stoppage the way Joe Frazier did after losing to Buster Mathis. He was the champ and had the power but he hid behind some bull****. The American press was biased for Riddick Bowe and he really didn't get enough heat for disgracing the title. Big Daddy could have fought Dokes and Ferguson..I don't begrudge him that chance to make $. After that it should have been on. In a reasonable time frame. At the end of the day he screwed himself because knowing he didn't accept the challenge of the best he ended up going into depression. Gained weight, lost his desire and a ton of respect. Riddick Bowe had a **** ton of ability and he had a chance but he didnt believe it. Then he lost his mind. there's no mystery here.
Did Joe Frazier lose to Buster Mathis? I understand the rest of your points, and to some degree sympathize with them. Not clear on the Mathis Frazier...didn't Joe stop Mathis? No offense intended.
Duck of the decade. Epic beef & rivalry. And Bowe bottled it. It's irrefutable. "Are we gonna call you Chicken Bowe? Are we gonna call you Chicken Bowe, or what?" --- The confrontation; Bowe: I want you to know something, bum. I'm not afraid of you, Lennox. And we're gonna get on it I owe you one. Lewis: Ok! Bowe: You're not the man I thought you was. You lied on me, I thought we was cool. Lewis: Yo bring it on, man. Bowe: Yeah I'm gonna bring it. I'm gonna bring it, you ain't said nothing but a word. Razor Roddock was afraid of you. Lewis: I'm gonna knock you out. Bowe: He was a chump. You've never knocked nothin' out, bum. Lewis: I'm gonna knock you out. Bowe: You've never knocked nothin' out. Lewis: You know I'm gonna knock you out! Bowe: You never knocked nothin' out. Lewis: *inaudilbe* Bowe: *inaudible* do it, then. Do it, then. You ain't gonna do sh*t. I ain't ne- I ain't never come off my feet. You had he- You had help from the ref. Lewis: *pointing* I'm gonna knock you out! *Lewis flinches slightly* Bowe: Well knock me out! Lewis: You aint nut'in to me! Bowe: Knock me out then, bum! *looks Lewis up n down & licks lips* Lewis: You aint nut'in to me! Bowe: You better watch yo mouth, sucker! Lewis: You aint nut'in to me! --- 1 minute later; Lewis: I looked into Riddick Bowe's eyes and I see- I seen absolute fear. He fears me. I think he's gonna sidestep me. Hopefully, he doesn't. Don't let me call him 'Chicken Bowe'. Bring it on, Bowe.
