I think H2H he is a definate top ten when you take him in hsi prime , he could have done so much , shame he was a bit of a lazy ass whole.
Bowe was nice on the inside, but wasn't the fastest guy, and could be outboxed. But if he had his head right, the sky was the limit for him.At the time he beat Holyfield, i could definitely have seen him beating Lewis.
Bowe's defense + Lewis's right hand = A Lewis KO. Quite similar to the Olympics actually except it might last a bit longer.
Riddick fuked himself because after he won the big money the motivation wasnt there anymore #1.......#2 bad managment ala rock newman realy fuked bowes career by dumping the # 1 guy lennox lewis for beating ruddock out in 2 rds...........and duping the wbc belt..............at that time bowe woulda been a betting favorite to beat lewis..........trhat reallty cost bowes career..........bowe even ducked francois botha as a comeback fight after loosing to holy in the 2nd fight and fought buster maths jr instead.....
Bowe's talent and potential was unlimited.... He had the tools and skills to be an ATG champion.... However, quick cash at a young age and a desire to pork out at the table, utterly ruined his career..... Again, is Bowe still on the comeback or not? He last fought in 2008... The hell is he doing now? I heard he was broke... For a dude being broke, Bowe hasn't been spotted scrubbing crappers at night at the local Burger King..... What kind of cash flow does Bowe got going in 2010?? MR.BILL:bbb
Bowe never had the skills or physical ability to be great even if he did have the dedication. His defense was very poor and his chin was never proven against the big punchers because he didn't face any. His speed and the way he put his punches together was pretty special for such a big man, although his outside game, use of range, jab/right were never up to the standards of Lewis/Wlad Tubbs outboxed him in his prime, so did Holyfield, Golota outboxed him and beat him up. Yes he was past prime against Golota but the straight up predictable Golota should never be outboxing a great boxer past prime or not. Aside from that where are the great or very good wins, there was only the Holyfield fight and Bowe had the style to beat Holyfield with his size and inside game, it doesn't mean he had the style to beat other top fighters Bowe was a fun fighter to watch but always a flawed one
Great post. Take Holyfield away and Bowe's resume is wafer thin, consisting largely of past prime once decent fighters (Tubbs,Dokes),capable but fragile fighters (Seldon,Cooper) and iffy fighters with inflated records (Gonzalez,Hide). Where were the likes of Ruddock,Mercer,Morrison,Lewis,Tyson or even a Bruno or Moorer? He could've and should've fought at least one of them but never did.Surely if he did a lot of questions would have been answered about him and I've got a feeling those answers would have burst a lot of the hype bubble that surrounded Big Daddy throughout the 1990's.
Absolutely spot on. Bowe was blessed with zero ability on the longevity front - Had he fought the same resume virtually any top 20 ATG it would be littered with L's His resume flatters him he really lost against Golota and should have been DQ'ed against Mathis. It makes me laugh when some posters bestow him with a great chin for fighting Cooper - Funny when people discuss true hard punchers Bert Cooper never gets a mention...Henry Cooper probably hit harder :yep
Bowe threw a belt in the garbage rather than fight his greatest challenge. How many fighters can say that?
Disagree. Without Newman, the Bowe career goes nowhere. There were questions about Bowe's character before he went to the olympic trails. This stuff didn't surface when he tried joining the marine corps--it was always there. After the olympic loss, there was not a lot of interest in the guy. A lot of trainers had turned him down. Not many managers had an interest. Rock Newman came out of nowhere and a different industry and threw his money at the guy's development. He even sold his own automobile for the funds to continue the Bowe polishing. Guys like Futch don't come cheap. Newman could've looked at sacking Eddie and going with somebody cheaper to save money. He didn't. Lots of people would have. Instead, he put all his eggs in one basket and kept on developing the guy. I don't see anyone else at that time investing their $$$ on Bowe. W/o a strong managerial team behind him for that 88-92 development, I see his career going considerably worse & he was a guy that had to have that backing.
Bowe at his (physical and mental) peak was the kind of guy who'd only lose to a great fighter but I'm not convinced he enters the pantheon of greats himself. A fantastic fighter but not the great people are making him out to be.
