I keep reading those stupid threads about how old or shot were hopkins and Jones when Joe fought them, dont u get that Joe is an old fighter too?? or your just plain stupid????, roy jones while being knocked out twice and lost because was too cautious was NEVER beaten that bad and he was clowned in the ring by JC, hopkins on the other hand never was beaten more convincibly then this, Kessler, some in here seem to forget that at the time they fough , a lot of experts were saying kessler would win and I was saying the same thing and no, joe simply was too much, the guy deserve a lot of credit and is not getting it from the pro american public, try and live with it, hes the best around and hes great. all that said I think prime for prime Joe beat Hopkins but a close but realy entertaining fight with Roy.
On boxing forums when discussing Joe, there are two types of posters, the fans that talk mostly logic, and then there are the haters:yep
I had made a thread between Joe and Monzon..They dismissed it saying calling me insane. They said you cant compare Joe to Monzon...I said why not?
People have been saying Hopkins is past it since he lost to Taylor and was no longer able to make the MW limit. Its not a new phenomenon that has surfaced after he lost to Calzaghe. did you know Calzaghe was a 3/1 fave to beat Hopkins before the fight? think about that.
Calzaghe and Hopkins are both past their very best, but they are both special atheletes. They certainly are not shot or done or any of this nonsense.
some right old bollox being talked here @ JC. A lot of fighters wouldn't take him on - & some that did wish they hadn't. Steve Collins refused to fight him - despite beating both Benn & Eubank. Eubank fought him (& lost) & wished he hadn't - muttering 'no wonder Steve Collins wouldn't fight him' - on his walk back to the dressing room. Benn admitted in a tv doc that Calzaghe was too good for both him & Eubank and anyone else around at the time (this was also Jones era!). Robin Reid probably gave him his closest fight. Sven Ottke wouldn't fight him (knowing he would lose his unbeaten record0. Lacy was no mug & got shown a boxing lesson. Kessler was no mug either Joe is still a very very good boxer / fighter - & hopefully will go out now on top. Pity terrestrial tv didn't see more of him - this bloody pay tv lark has horribly marginalised boxing for the general public
Good point, however different fighters age at different times. Its called Ring age. The same applies to fighters reaching their peak and being shot. Whilst Calzaghe is 36 it MUST be stressed he is closer to his peak than Jones and Bhop. In fact, it could be argued he was at his peak maybe after the Jeff Lacy fight or around that time. Another example would be Morales who was effectively shot by the age of 30 whilst Pac man was at Prime around 28. Remeber whilst Calzaghe was making Debut, Jones was winning his first of Four world titiles at Middleweight......
Jones had been knocked cold twice in three of his loses , and had taken more punishment in three of his wins and that including the pasting he took from tarver in they're first fight. .. so not only was Roy past it he was pretty much beat the hell up before stepping in the ring with joe.
