It's legal but a cheap shot...it's also a cheap shot for the fans that want to see a good fight.its going to be interesting where rigo goes from here and if his gonna be the bad boy of boxing..rigo defently is a bad ass I wouldn't want to run into him..
Cheap shot. **** this guy. I laughed at Floyd's cheap shot vs Ortiz (I didn't pay PPV) because Ortiz headbutted him hard and Floyd sort of gave him a warning shot, but this? this is just bull****.
Ask yourself this: Why is everyone making a big deal about it? I think the answer you'll come to is that: yes, under a formal interpretation of the rules there is absolutely nothing wrong with what Rigo did. However, as boxing fans we've all seen literally thousands of glove touches mid fight, and very few of them go this way. So while it's true that Sod should probably have never gone for the glove touch (or any fighter for that matter, I guess) only a very small percentage of this very common boxing spectacle pans out like this. That's why people are calling it cheap. As far as what's expected after a glove touch? Well, the precedence is generally something like this: -a foul happens -time is called out for one fighter to collect himself -time is called in after an interval and the ref says 'box!' -both fighters extend a glove to show 'no hard feelings on the foul' and tap -one (or both fighters) then tend to either take a half step back, a full step back or maintain their current distance -fight goes back to it's normal ebb and flow. Assuming you've watched boxing for more then a week you've definitely seen this play out a bunch. There's no need to be disingenuous.
I dislike Floyd, but this wasn't nearly as bad as his cheap shot. Ortiz headbutted him intentionally, and really hard. This was an accidental headbutt. Rigo is garbage.
A) the initial headbutt was Sod's own fault; he led with his throwing a left hook. Guillermo was basically fixed in place while Sod clanged his own skull off his. B) the hook-cross two-piece shouldn't be called sucker punches, IMO. The ref had indicated they should box. Sod knew this. Nothing about the ref's instructions were ambiguous. From when Mark Nelson said "time in", five seconds passed and Sod had taken seven plodding steps out from the neutral corner toward his opponent, without Guillermo showing any misleading signs of going for a glove touch or any other 'ceremony of apology' bull****. Time in. Step, step, step, step, step, step, in-range, step - boom-boom, good-night. Perfectly legitimate KO. Yes, perhaps Nelson should have given him more recovery time after the butt (which, again, was his own fault even though he got the worst of it) and yet he still clearly seemed to understand that it was 'time in' and had five seconds to get his defenses up while taking his seven paces out toward his coiled & ready foe. People saying Rigondeaux is dirty because he a) butted Looknongyangtoy (other way around) or b) threw a cheap shot (not after that much time and that many steps, no way...it was self-defense time...) are just showing their bias, I think. Rigondeaux jabbed at Looknongyangtoy's glove, and whether it was meant to be indulging his gesture of touching gloves or dismissing it and warning him "nah, hell with that, get ready..." it was time for Looknongyangtoy to be alert. He wasn't, and Rigondeaux is super fast. End of story. Nothing cheap or dirty about it.
A ritual and rhythm? He had been waiting on the lazy sod for a full five seconds and seven steps after 'time in'. Yeah, he just threw a quick and cursory jab into Looknongyangtoy's glove, like "Yeah alright we're cool, no hard feelings, whatever (the butt WAS initiated by Looknongyangtoy, remember) - back to business..." and then he was well within his rights to return to work immediately. **** "ritual and rhythm". As soon as the gloves touch, the ritual is over. There is no minimum amount of time before it's okay to throw a punch. Once there is that sportsmanlike moment of leather on leather contact, the fight is back on. GET READY. Hell, be ready before the contact is made - just in case your opponent is lightning quick, as Rigondeaux is.
I was very much looking forward to Rigondeaux putting on another boxing masterclass, and in that sense I was disappointed by the outcome of his fight with Kokietgym. However, I had been genuinely nervous for Rigondeaux going into this fight, because the last time a Top Rank boxer fought the last fight of his existing contract without a pending extension, Pacquiao got robbed by the judges in his first fight with Bradley, and subsequently seemed more or less forced to sign an extension with Top Rank. Because of that, Rigondeaux not letting this fight go to the judges, however he made it happen, was fine with me.
Protect yourself at all times, he did give him a glove tap and then he threw the jab, it was his fault for not protecting himself from those punches
***** move. Boxing sucks now. Is Pacquiao still in a coma? Has Mayweather fought anyone good yet? Does Mexico have any good up and comers? What's a Cuba? Are those big Russian Cyborgs still fighting? Thanks ahead of time.
He wasn't able to protect himself really because he was trying to touch gloves--as a sign of respect between two fighters. Rigo baited him and then sucker punched him.
I think he watched Mayweather-Ortiz recently and decided to spice things up a little. It is protect yourself at all times, after all. Someone should have reminded Sod.
