Seems like a lot of hype over guys who haven't fought a single fight as pros. Boxing history is LITTERED with amateurs who flopped in the pro ranks. Jorge Luis Gonzalez anyone?? Ramon Garbey???
Do ordinary fighters win mutiple Olympic championships? Guillermo Rigondeaux is not Gonzalez or Garbey. But he has to relearn his fundamentals for the pro game the same an another am who turns pro. Gonzalez and Garbey didn't learn that lesson. In order to get tough, you have to be matched tough. Gonzalez' first tough fight should not have been against Bowe for the WBO belt...
A lot didnt though, aswell. I think the way the amatuers have changed over the years, fighters are less prepared for the pro ranks when they switch then they were 20 years ago. Rigon is a crazy athletic talent however..I reckon he will tear through his early opponants but we will have to wait and see how he goes later on.
Big mistake for Garbey to jump into the heavy weight division similar to the Castillo brothers they don't have the high or weight to compete with the huge heavies put the blame on the promoter. This German promoter is spending lot's of money taking these Cubans boxers out of Cuba definitely he got the best stable right now excellent talent with the pedigree.
This is great, great news for boxing, frankly Boxing needs Cuban professional stars. I have been impressed with all the talent that has come recently, and I can't wait to see all of these guys perform. I wish them luck!
Guys, why the hell is everone (every single report) keep saying Rigondeaux is 27, when he's 28. Little mistake but still.
They have such a short window at their age... gotta have a 2 year plan to fight for a belt to have any kind of run with it. Wait and see, hopefully they will be fighting almost monthly against decent comp.
Yes, if you defect from Cuba (even if you just leave and you hold no significant job) they come and take all you old belongings and your old family can't have jobs unless there really bad jobs. But good for him anyway.
