Rigondeaux has way too low workrate - do you agree?

I just checked out all the professional bouts of Rigondeaux and I noticed that - even compared to his former amateur style - he has a very very low workrate. As a consequence, his real punching power is also a secret for me.

He is indeed very slick and has wonderful, unique reflexes, but is this enough against a heavy handed and fast pressure fighter with a decent chin? I am not saying Cordoba is one of them, but Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. is more like that perhaps....

    Opinions? :huh

I feel sorry for aggressive fighters that walk into this guys counterpunching. Saw him blast a guy to the liver and it was a powerful shot.

I agree that his work-rate is low, but he's very economical with his punches and I think that has made the manner of his victories - although against poor opposition - look more impressive because he hasn't been wasting punches. I hope that when it comes to him being required to throw more leather, he will do so.

I haven't really seen him pushed at all, so I haven't seen him need to up the output. It's a good observation, but one I don't think will have a chance to affect him in his next fight.

I understand that being economic makes his stoppage wins more impressive, but on the other hand I just feel the lack of killer instinct. For instance if you watch the first fights of Gamboa, you will see a wild, agressive beast.

In any event, if this style makes Rigo a p4p great, who cares...

Workrate is a big issue if you want to attract the professional audience, plus as you said, Rigo might not be able to keep off a solid chinned pressure fighter with a such selective punching. That's why I hope Ronnie Shields will bring the beast out of him, after all, Rigo has one helluva punch. Cordoba is an extremely tough test at this stage because he brings a lot of intensity, and I'm equally excitied and worried how this plays out.

thats kind of.. no scratch that, thats a REALLY stupid thing to say. despite of the fact he only has 6 fights as a pro he hasn't fought one oppnent with a losing record, and the opposition he has faced so early in his career is stellar. add that to the fact he completely dominated them, so what are you talking about?:huh

It's because he's a counter puncher. The fighters he faces are too scared and he needs to force the issue which is something he doesn't do. Therefore, he fights at his own pace. Against Cordoba I think we'll see him throwing more but only because Cordoba will be forcing the issue and fighting and then we will see Rigondeaux punishing him time after time.

If anything i'd say it demonstrates his killer instinct. He sits, waits, sees an opening and then rapes. How is that not killer instinct? He looks to dispose of an opponent in the most efficient way possible

Since you mentioned Papito, lets compare up until their 6 fight
    Rigondeuax
    3-2
    4-2
    60-11
    8-4
    20-12
33-18 and his next fight is against a guy with 37w 2L and 23ko (he beat Caballeros too)
    WVII
    0-1
    1-0
    0-3
    0-4
    0-0
    5-1
2-1 (yes I know he didn't have any amateurt experience, but he grew up around professional boxing, being his father a HOF boxer, I'm sure he use to train with his father)
You don't need to throw 100 punches per round if you are doing damage throwing 20 and landing 12, knocking out guys with one punch, beside he hasn't being push at all. IMO he will do just fine, his only problem is his age.

I agree... I've only seen him fight a couple times, but I think his work-rate is low because he's like a snake waiting to counter and he has sneaky speed, power and throws wicked body shots. I think a pressure fighter that goes in throwing a volume of punches against Rigondeaux will go to sleep before the final bell rings.
