Rigo won but did not convinced the audience. His power, combinations and decision to fight was not there but to ride his bike all fight long. This is not what people who pay want to see. Rigo if you have good advisers you should know that you'll be able to win all championship fights but will not be accepted by the public, not even the Cuban one. You are expected to do more, such amateur champ, just running all night long without combining any punches is completely unacceptable. You must change otherwise you'll end up being a disgraced champion without any fame at all. You have said that you wont change your style...then you must see what the consequences are....!

He is too ingrained with his amateur style. It will take some time to rework him into an exciting pro... Too bad hes already 30. He probably should have stuck with Roach.

People! People! Please it was only his 7th Pro Fight ! All he has to do is ADJUST not change his Style, He is 30 years old , it's a bit too late to change anything. He needs a Trainer that explains to him that the way he Fought after the 6th Round is wrong , Its totally amateurish, giving to much respect to his oponent without being Hurt or anything. You can fight that way for a couple of rounds at the end of a fight if you already have donned your work in the early rounds and are not behind in the cards , also if you get hurt or something. I also think he needs to watch tape of other fighters ( Mayweather come to mind ) so he can see how he waste Punching opportunities, Etc. He says he don't like watching tape and I think this is a mistake, anyways congratulations to Rigo for making History in an "ugly" kind of way. Peace.

He should've stayed with Roach. He has Pac's footspeed, in-out style, angles, natural power if stands his ground, and showed the stamina as well, and Roach would've turned up his aggression and worked on the rhythm & accuracy. It's not that Shields is inferior to Freddie - he's not - Rigo simply has what Roach likes in a fighter and Freddie has what Rigondeaux needs in a trainer, it's a match made in heaven, so Guillermo better get his ass back to Wild Card. (Though I like the progress the good looking Erislandy Lara made with Ronnie).

cant teach old dogs new tricks.. Rigondeaux was molded for that style.. amateur style.. that style is his bread and butter..

amazing to watch for few rounds but boring for a 12 rounder..

He is what he is, too late in his career to change. But that doesn't mean he cant make a good career with that style and make some millions. Ivan Calderon did it, Floyd mayweather is still doing it and a lot of boxers before him made millions and won lots of fights with that boring style. All it takes is a good opponent that will pressure him and the fight will be a little bit more entertaining. Macho Camacho was another one that won like that.

He will not change, and people who say it was only his 7th pro fight forget why that is... He was amateur for too long and started too late as a pro. He might make a few ajustments, but it wouldn't change much. He can't affort to also, because he's already fighting at world level and can't take too much risks, certainly not with that feeble chin of his.

Rigondeaux beats a former world champion, and a former world champion who is still only 27 and has a victory over Caballero and a very narrow loss to Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym to his a name, in only his 7th pro fight and in his first ever time beyond 8 rounds... and to listen to most of the people around here you'd think this was nothing.

That just goes to show the power of hype, I suppose - if you are presented as the second coming of Sugar Ray Robinson and you fall short, the backlash can be huge.

Rigondeaux is a fast, tricky defensive boxer who has neither the need nor the desire to stand in front of a dangerous guy trading with him. Hitting and running once he was well in front was the sensible thing for him to do. That said, he has so far shown little in the way of inside fighting skills, and well, that's a pretty serious department to be lacking in. If he doesn't quickly improve that part of his game, he will be vulnerable to effective pressure fighting. That is, if anyone can get inside and stay inside, which is far from a given.

The thing is though that it isn't as if he was fighting some past it contender or fellow prospect. It isn't as if the division is loaded with guys who are markedly better than Cordoba - Cordoba has already shown that he's a match for Poonsawat and Caballero, two of the biggest names in or around the division. Rigondeaux isn't going to reinvent his style from scratch at his age, but it isn't as if he needs to.
