Junior featherweight Guillermo Rigondeaux, a two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist who defected last year and is one of boxing's top prospects, injured his back and withdrew Wednesday from his fight on Saturday night.
Rigondeaux (5-0, 4 KOs) was scheduled to face experienced Reynaldo Lopez (30-7-3, 21 KOs) of Colombia at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., on the undercard of the Andre Berto-Carlos Quintana welterweight title bout. HBO, which is televising, was slated to air highlights of Rigondeaux's bout, which is unusual for a fighter with so little pro experience.
However, Rigondeaux, citing a sore back after some rough sparring with a welterweight, pulled out, show promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com.
"He said he hurt his back. What can I tell you? He pulled out," DiBella said.
However, Rigondeaux (5-0, 4 KOs) is also changing trainers, which may be part of the reason for his withdrawal, although his promoter, Luis DeCubas, said the injury was legitimate.
There was a lot of hype surrounding Rigondeaux's pairing with trainer Freddie Roach last summer. After working out with Rigondeaux for the first time, Roach compared the feeling he got working with him to the way he felt when he first worked out with Manny Pacquiao, who went on to become the pound-for-pound king. But now Rigondeaux and Roach have split, DeCubas told ESPN.com.
"His feeling is he's a two-time gold medal winner and he went all the way out there and felt there were too many fighters in the gym," DeCubas said of Roach's Wild Card gym in Hollywood, Calif. "Nobody was picking him up in the morning to run and he felt he should have been sparring with lighter guys, not 150-pounders. He wasn't getting enough attention from Freddie. He's very disappointed."
Roach, however, was unhappy with Rigondeaux's conditioning and didn't want him to fight Saturday, according to a source close to the trainer.
DeCubas said Rigondeaux is back in Miami, where he is based, looking for a trainer.

    bad move

sounds like Rigonedeaux felt like he had a sense of entitlement, he should be working in the trenches with the rest of the soldiers and not expect preferential treatment.

a lot of cuban boxers seem to have problems when they turn pro with the grey matter between there ears when it comes to living the spartan lifestyle needed between fights to keep in shape .

hopefully Rigondeaux will not be one of these because with one exception over the last 15 to 20 years casamayor ,so many former cuban amatuer stars have pissed away there careers.

Rigondeaux looks class and hopefully this is just something to do with money or clash of personalities.

    It's a gym :blood

this part right here is very pathetic, he needs someone to pickup him up to run? does he need someone to pick him up after soccer practice too?

He's fine with Roach! he has been asked to go spy on the Mayweather camp for Manny and Roach this whole thing is an elaborate hoax.

thats what alot of fighters do when training with roach, they get mad that there's too many fighters in the gym.

most fighters like their trainer watching them every step of the way from the bag work to skipping etc

but Roach only focuses on his fighters while doing mitts and sparring, he also spends time with them discussing tactics, apart from that he lets them get on with it, he doesn't hang around to watch his fighters work the bag, jump rope, do conditioning drills.

    most fighters dont like that.

Bad back, its strange how this injury is cited so often when pulling out of fights. It's hardly ever anything which can be evident to be genuine. Rigondeaux probably has a bigger fight lined up.

The solution to that would be hiring a few junior trainers who overlook skipping/jogging etc.. so at least the fighters feel they're being followed up, although it's true that they should be able to do it on their own.

Roach does have quiet a few assistant trainers, i think 5 in total

the second in charge after Roach is a well known trainer, i cant remember his name but he trained Johnny Tapia.

****in prima donna, used to being treated like a king in cuba. this attitude makes me think he may not pan out to be as great as he could be. great boxers thrive when things are uncomfortable not when theyre cosy. if its good enought for pac and kahn then its good enough for this guy=- he should accept he s 3rd or 4th in the pecking order and use it to motivate him. you get better by training with better fighters not by being the king straight off. typical small fish, big pond mentality.

rigondeaux is gonna find out soon enough unless he goes to a no name trainer he cant get everything he wants...

Nazim Richardson trains 3 big named fighters and alot of amateurs, roger trainers floyd jr and other fighters including alot of amateurs, even orlando cuellar (gamboas coach) has a packed gym

now unless he goes to someone like Jorge Rubio he will have to share trainers.

Roach has always been like this which is why guys like Israel Vasquez and Brian Viloria left him in the past. Some fighters just prefer to have their hands held all the time.

Rigondeaux will end up like Guzman, a great talent but not enough discipline to a top P4P
