Suppose Rigondeaux gets a title shot at Celestino later this year, say October. Rigondeaux would probably have 3 more fights by then. How do you see this fight going?
While Rigo is far the superior technical fighter, his amount of pro experience probably won't be enough. Caballero isn't too great but he's been in many title fights, is awkward as hell, very tall and has balls. He's a handful. Rigo would be moved along too quickly, probably. There are too many unanswered questions about him as a pro yet for me to pick him.
I have to agree but this is what makes this fight intriguing IMO. The problem is, Gamboa is on a collision course with JML, so a fight with them would probably not happen for Rigondeaux. That leaves Celestino.
I think Rigo could pull this off...I'd hate to say it but for a unified champion Caballero really isn't anything special. He's tall, he's akward, the throws at angles, but he gets reckless and off balance too often and he doesn't use his height well and he's very hittable. He's like a bantam version of Paul Williams....a guy like Rigo who's offense is based on precise and powerful counterpunches could take him, I'll go with Rigo
i have high hopes for rigondeaux....he has good boxing skills..... this will be a tough test for him....
Reading your post I was thinking I was agreeing about your opinion of Caballero and just before reading the Paul Williams comparison that's the exact thought I had. He is similar to Paul Williams in that way. I don't really understand why JML didn't get in the ring with him. I know there's a lot we don't know about with promoters and such but it did come across as a blatant duck that Caballero did everything he could to call out JML and when a unified champion calls out a big young star with another title, you'd think he would take him up on it. I think JML would've handled Caballero and that it wouldn't necessarily even have been a hard night. Maybe his people saw something different or the money just wasn't right. Disappointing to me, anyway.
What has Caballero done compared to Rigondeaux? Please! This is a joke! Rigondeaux is one of the best amateurs of all times, amateur or pro... Rigondeaux is a legend... Rigondeaux is 2 times Olympic Gold Medalist ( would had won 4 Golds if not for defection ) Rigondeaux is 7 times Cuban National Champion... Rigondeaux is 3 or 4 times World Amateur Champion... Rigondeaux is World Cup winner... Rigondeaux is PanAm Champion... Rigondeaux is Caribean Games Champion... Rigondeaux defeated all of the very best that the World thru at him, and was the best bantamweight in more than a decade!!! Caballero??? ZERO, NOTHING, just professional hype... OUTCOME: Rigondeaux cruises by Caballero or TKO's him nasty style!!! Just wait...
A: While I have high hopes for Rigo too, many great amateurs do little or nothing of note in the pros. We're in the pros now. Different ball game. B: To say Caballero has done nothing is an ignorant statement. I'm sure you know this. He's 9-0 in world title fights, including unifying titles during his reign going back to 2006. Do you really believe that's ''just professional hype'', as you put it? So, if Rigo were to beat him next year would you give him no credit because Caballero only accomplished ''professional hype'' and wasn't even a challenge, or would you give him great respect for taking on a solid champ and seasoned veteran of the sport so early in his pro career?
