This thread, I pushed him to lay out his argument. It's honestly hard to even formulate half of his reasoning. It's layers upon layers of dead ends and contradictions. I dismanlted him here in post #190 https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/duran-explains-why-he-quit-april-1981-ring-interview.594341/page-13 Here are his actual quotes so you know what you are getting into: " He(Duran) never faced guys like Floyd or Pernell or Ray, who would easily outbox him." "The guys Duran fought at lightweight would not be exceptional in other eras." "And Hearns when he beat Hill was the same age Duran was when Duran fought Hearns,, And Hill was near Hearns age, when Hearns fought Duran." "Duran's only win over and elite is Ray Leonard,, and Cuevas, who was washed up at that point" "Didn't I say Elites as plural? And Duran beat one." "I dismiss Barkley and Moore as not elites, which I mean wins over elites get a guy the all time great ranking." "Hearns and Benitez. That is what I mean by elite." "Barkley and Moore beat them (Hearns and Benitez) ....but that does not make Barkley and Moore elites. . And they did not beat them in a big superfight." "Carlos Palomino was not a great fighter" "His(Duran) weakeness at lightweight with the wide stance was not exploited at lightweight, because the guys there were not good enough." "Pulled off multiple huge upsets? How?? He was beaten by Benitez" "He pulled off what looks like upsets " "Hearns beat Duran in 1984 when both were champs at 154." "In my mind, Duran did not pull off multiple upsets against elites. " "We know who the elites are." "no one can say Duran really did beat great fighters. I want people to prove me wrong and they can't. It is all excuses about Duran instead of, well he beat this great."...??? "I knew Duran would beat Barkley. I thought, boy they are giving him the title and against a guy who beat Hearns, " "which is two rounds longer than when Duran fought Hearns when Hearns stopped Duran when Duran was at the same weight class. I am not sure. Duran did not fight elites at lightweight. My thinking is a guy who moved like Ray could beat Duran if Ray moved up."-----wtf?
There's a lot of unknowns here (how much Rigo had left at his age, the extent of his hand injury etc), but I still think Loma looked phenomenal. His technique, timing and feinting... Jesus. Hope we see him against Garcia soon.
Didn't bother watching the fight and I certainly don't feel like I missed anything. Sounds like just another dud in an assembly line assortment of "super fights" between supposed elites that are supposed to end up wowing all viewers, but does the complete opposite and underwhelms all.
This was the first underwhelming super fight I've seen since Floyd-Pac. And tbh I didn't have high hopes for that one. I think Ward-Kova, Joshua-Wlad and Golovkin-Canelo were all quality fights. You might not agree with the decisions in these fights, but I can't see how the fights themselves were bad. Rigo was a serious disappointment in this one, though. But no shadow on Loma. He did what he could to make a fight out of it.
“No break, but severe contusion on left hand.” https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/boxing/5125464/guillermo-rigondeaux-not-hand-humiliating-vasiliy-lomachenko/
YES. They do in fact. He's universally regarded as the GOAT Light Heavy, as you said a top 25 HW, and he has some all time great wins at MW. In the pinned topic of this very forum, you will find him rated as the #5 P4P of all time. Are you kidding me? Ezzard Charles is a top all time Lhvy maybe the best, and he makes the top ten p4p without any trouble, indeed most would have him inside the top 5.
I think Charles comfortably ranks above the bold and arguably above the underlined ones. Where you are right is that there are a lot of casual boxing fans have opinions that are somewhat aligned with yours. However, there is a difference between an opinion and an informed opinion. The first one is quite easy to be dismissed IMO.
Special performance by Lomachenko. He made Rigondeaux Quit. Quit. I'll say it one more time quit. Before the 7th round even started. So an all time Amateur and two time Olympic Gold medalist lasted half a fight before retiring on his stool. I never thought that would be the outcome even though I picked Lomachenko and I do believe he had a clear advantage in size and youth. The fight wasn't even competitive. Excellent win for Lomachenko. And really bad loss for Rigondeaux. All fighters have different shelf life and with Lomachenko's extended amateur career I'm not sure how long he will have his A' game. But he seems to be peaking so I hope he gets in the ring with Linares, Pacquaio and Garcia within the next 12-18 months. That is the competition level he needs he is that good.
