He made the," I could never have beaten him in a thousand years ,"comment to Bohun Lynch on the homeward train I think that was his real opinion, before his ego perhaps kicked in later.

In later years he did and Louis reciprocated.

I suppose in that case, he was marginally more gracious to Johnson than Johnson was to Louis, despite Johnson humiliating him in the ring.

Well he many times called him a,[ hope these get taken out]****** ,ape,****,skunk, yellow dog ,in public and in print , so admitting he was beaten by the better man may have been gracious,Johnson questioned Louis' stance and his ability to think smoothly under pressure ,turned out he knew what he was talking about.Johnson was given the cold shoulder by Louis' brains trust, they feared being tainted by his unpopularity among many Whites, understandably he wasn't enamoured by that reaction,
How many photos have you seen of Joe with Jack? Not many I bet!
It's perhaps worth mentioning that Johnson never saw any of Joe's last 14 fights which include
    Conn2.Mauriello Walcott 1&2,Charles, and Marciano.

I'm not arguing that Jeffries didn't deserve to be humiliated in some deeper moral sense. I'm only saying that one would expect getting snubbed by Louis to be easier to get over than getting publicly and embarrassingly thrashed by Johnson in front of the whole racist world. Especially after publicly calling Johnson all the names you mentioned. That's a lot of crow to eat.

Yes indeed,Jeffries was totally distraught and in tears after the fight, crying,"God,this is terrible"! Being beat up publicly by a man you despise must be a bitter pill indeed!

Joe Louis doesn't circle he is a methodically straight forward fighter, Jack Johnson would catch him off balance and Say Le Vie! Besides, JJ would block every straight punch and Louis would be in worst shape opening up to JJ counters. I doubt very much that he couldn't hit JJ in the face one time.

I wonder which of his own opponents Jack would have picked to beat Primo? Ketchel...? Burns...?

I don't see any reason to pick Griffin, Moran, Childs or Kaufman over Carnera.

Primo had so much heart and courage I've grown to like him .. I guess he's one of those guys the match up and the ref is huge .. I certainly don't think he was a great fighter but whatever his origins he did become a fighter and had a good jab, terrific stamina for a huge guy and held his own ..

I cant see any reason not to and I'd give Lang and Ferguson chances too.
