How do you think the era's compare head for head? Have a guess, all or one. Heavyweight....................Joe Frazier v Wlad Klitschko Light-heavyweight.............Bob Foster v Joe Calzaghe Middleweight.....................Carlos Monzon v Kelly Pavlik Welterweight....................Billy Backus v Antonio Margarito Light-welterweight.............Nico Loche v Ricky Hatton Lightweight......................Ken Buchanan v Joel Casamayor Junior Lighweight...............Hiroshi Kobayashi v Manny Pacquiao Featherweight...................Kuniaki Shibata v Chris John Bantamweight...................Chucho Castillo v Hozumi Hasewaga Flyweight.........................Erbito Slavarria v Nonito Doniare
Heavyweight....................Joe Frazier v Wlad Klitschko Light-heavyweight.............Bob Foster v Joe Calzaghe Middleweight.....................Carlos Monzon v Kelly Pavlik Light-welterweight.............Nico Loche v Ricky Hatton Lightweight......................Ken Buchanan v Joel Casamayor These are the fighters i know enough about to judge the fights and i simply can´t see any of today´s fighters winning. When Wlad goes out from the beginning and tries to blow out the slow starting Frazier, he has a chance but it is slim. All the other i don´t give any.
Why did I pick 1970? It's long enough ago that it can be a meaningful cross-era comparison but recent enough that I don't have to get bogged down with arguments about advancing technique etc.
Great idea for a thread McGrain, great avatar pic too. I'd go with: Klitschko on points (I despise Wlad as a fighter, but IMO Frazier is one of the most overrated boxers in history and I think Wlad could safety-first jab, move, and outbox the smaller man), Foster by KO (Calzaghe has never fought anyone with anywhere near the quality of Foster), Monzon by stoppage, Margarito, Loche, Buchanan, Pacquiao, and south of that I don't know enough about the 70s boxers to comment.
Just out of interest, when do you think boxing evolved into what it is now? I'd probably say the 1930's, with fighters like Joe Louis being particular pioneers of the modern style. Anyway, to answer the thread... Heavyweight....................Joe Frazier v Wlad Klitschko I do think this is an interesting fight. Klitschko controls his fights and range and doesn't let his opponent work on the inside. For a guy as short as Frazier, it's going to be so hard for him to effectively work, when he's getting jabbed to **** on the outside and clinched on the inside. I think he'd get dominated for a few rounds, taking serious punishment. However, as the fight wears on, he'd be landing occasional body shots which would slow Klitschko down. I think Klitschko's stamina is possibly his biggest weakness, besides his mentality. As Frazier lands to the body, he'd start slowing down and that's when Frazier would go the head and finish him. Frazier KO 10. Light-heavyweight.............Bob Foster v Joe Calzaghe Foster is a much superior fight. He'd outjab Calzaghe, keeps his distance and stop him in in the middle round. Dominant performance that isn't worth talking about. Foster KO 6 Middleweight.....................Carlos Monzon v Kelly Pavlik Very interesting fight. Monzon would have some problems as Pavlik as the size and style avantage in this fight. I don't think Monzon has the power to really hurt Pavlik, barring a perfect punch like Taylor landed. I think this one is much closer than people think, and by the end of his career I may end up picking Pavlik, as, like I said, he has the styles advantage. However, he hasn't proven his class yet, so it's hard to pick him outright. Monzon UD12 Welterweight....................Billy Backus v Antonio Margarito From what I've seen, Backus was not a great fight and probably got lucky to beat Napoles. However, I haven't seen enough of him to really analyse this fight. If anyone would like to school me on him, I'd really appreciate it. Margarito KO12. Light-welterweight.............Nico Loche v Ricky Hatton I've always maintained that even though Ricky Hatton is not an top 10 light welter, head to head, he does beat some of the top 10. Locche is one of those 10. Locche is too stationary to beat Hatton and his body is too open. Against a head hunter, Locche is perfectly suited, but a body puncher? No. Guys like Hatton, Chavez and Cotto would tear his body up. IN between rounds, I can't imagine Locche would want a cigarette against Hatton Hatton UD12. Lightweight......................Ken Buchanan v Joel Casamayor if it was prime vs. prime, this could actually be an interesting fight. I'd pick Buchanan regardless, but Casa in his prime was a really good fighter. Buchanan wins this one though. A much better fighter, end of. Buchanan UD12 Junior Lighweight...............Hiroshi Kobayashi v Manny Pacquiao I've only seen Kobayashi vs. Duran, I think. Can't remembe now. Anyway, because of my lack of knowledge, I can't make a fair pick on this one. Look at their records, I imagine Pacquiao would win this one. Possibly by a late stoppage. Pacquiao KO11. I don't know enough about the other fighters, sadly. Even the modern ones, so I won't comment on those. This is a good thread though, and it deserves some replies :good
I am only going to pick the ones that I have knowledge of Heavyweight....................Joe Frazier TKO10 Light-heavyweight.............Bob Foster KO8 Middleweight.....................Carlos Monzon KO8 Welterweight.................... Antonio Margarito TKO11 Light-welterweight.............Nico Loche UD Lightweight......................Ken Buchanan UD
Good thread McGrain, lets see, my picks Heavyweight....................Joe Frazier v Wlad Klitschko - this is the easiest pick for me, not to discredit Wladimir at all, but Frazier by stoppage and i defo. Light-heavyweight.............Bob Foster v Joe Calzaghe, as great as Calzage is, and imo he is, he comes to fight, and Foster hits so hard, and was prolific at 175, Foster imo. Middleweight.....................Carlos Monzon v Kelly Pavlik, it can only be justified to pick Monzon Welterweight....................Billy Backus v Antonio Margarito, dont know too much about Backus in honesty, but i know a bit, this will be my first choice where i will pick a modern-day guy, on his best night though. Light-welterweight.............Nico Loche v Ricky Hatton, Locche all-day. Lightweight......................Ken Buchanan v Joel Casamayor, what a classy one this would be, this is pure teasing here McGrain!!!, i'll pick Buchanan on the strength of extra class imo. Junior Lighweight...............Hiroshi Kobayashi v Manny Pacquiao, its a good one, but Pacquiao for me. Featherweight...................Kuniaki Shibata v Chris John, Shibata. Bantamweight...................Chucho Castillo v Hozumi Hasewaga, Castillo Flyweight.........................Erbito Slavarria v Nonito Doniare, Donaire.
Good post McGrain. Many people forget that in 1970 you had far less weight divisions and far fewer organisations (there was really only WBA & WBC). For this reason the 1970's guys really were the best-in-the-world! I'll take a crack at few: Heavyweight....................Joe Frazier v Wlad Klitschko If Joe could reach him, he'd wop him. Human's are getting much bigger each generation and that's obviously an issue at HW. Light-heavyweight.............Bob Foster v Joe Calzaghe Gotta be Calzaghe. Middleweight.....................Carlos Monzon v Kelly Pavlik Probably Monzon. He was something very special. Light-welterweight.............Nico Loche v Ricky Hatton Loche for me. Lightweight......................Ken Buchanan v Joel Casamayor It gets harder as you go down the divisions! Probably Buchanan.
Alright, so I'm guessing we're adjusting for inflation here because Wlad is simply too big for Frazier. I know everyone on here loves to nut hug older fighters but Wlad would handle Frazier like a rag doll.
Wlad TKO's Frazier- this is a bad style matchup for Joe because Wlad has enough reach to outjab him, can counter right over the top of Frazier's best weapon (the left hook), and has shown he's none too shy about tying up to negate the opponents attack on the inside once Joe does get there. Foster wins by UD or late TKO- Foster's too big, has a great right hand with speed and power, and would be facing a Calzaghe near the end of his rope. Joe would land, but won't hit hard enough to alter Foster's gameplan. Monzon beats Pavlik, but this would be a great, brutal fight. Comparing the Monzon of 1970 vs today's Pavlik, Pavlik's actually faced the tougher competition with the exception of Benvenuti. Would be one of the few times Carlos went in as the smaller man, as well. Margarito beats Backus. I think Margo's just the better fighter, although I have to give Backus full credit for pulling lightning out of a bottle against Napoles in their first fight. I rate Locche higher, but think Hatton could win because Locche didn't have much power to keep Hatton off and Ricky knows to work the body, which would negate Nicolino's greatest strength. It's hard to tell what Hattons got left though, and Locche literally shut out Cervantes around that time period. Toss-up for me.
