RING EDITOR BELIEVES PACQUIAO CAN BE POUND FOR POUND NO. 1

    This content is protected

The respected editor of Ring Magazine, regarded as the “Bible” of boxing believes that Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao “may very well become number one” in the Ring pound-for-pound rankings “if he looks good in his next fight.”

Collins told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that it was “impossible to demote Floyd Mayweather Jr immediately after he beat Oscar De La Hoya in the richest fight in boxing history.”

Pacquiao who was rated No. 3 behind Mayweather and Winky Wright but was elevated to No. 2 after what Collins termed "the blast out of (Erik) Morales" in the third fight of a classic trilogy. After naming Pacquiao Ring Magazine's "Fighter of the Year" Collins in his Ringside column wrote that although Mayweather and Pacquiao are unquestionably two of the sports finest practitioners "when it comes to providing entertainment 'Pac-Man' is so far ahead of ' Pretty Boy' they are not even in the same league."

Collins said that if the negotiations between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank whose lawyers have been meeting in an effort to work out their difficulties prior to what could be a lengthy and costly court battle are successful, it could lead to a showdown between Pacquiao and reigning WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez “which would crown a new Ring Magazine champion.” Marquez and Pacquiao are ranked No.1 and 2 by Ring.

Collins also noted that “unlike in the Philippines, Manny’s political adventure has not detracted from his popularity in the United States.” The Ring Magazine editor-in-chief said fight fans know that they are “virtually guaranteed an exciting fight every time Manny steps into the ring and eagerly await his next fight, regardless of the opponent.”

At the same time Collins said that a fight between Pacquiao and Mexican Humberto Soto who recently stopped Pacquiao’s younger brother Bobby Pacquiao “would be well received here.”

Collins pointed out that “sometimes Filipinos get too caught up in the periphery events surrounding Pacquiao and forget what he does once the bell rings.”

Pacquiao is my P4P no1 fighter. It used to be Mayweather, but he stunk the joint out against DLH, who was there for the taking.

Pac has beaten the lot, & in style. Hes a fight fans dream, & thats why hes my undisputed P4P no1.

The Ring magazine is pretty **** nowadays, but I agree with that article.

If he looks good in his next fight? :yikes Who the **** is Sotto? Of course he can be number #1 . . . that is if he beats Marquez and/or Guzman who are both title holders.

Since when did anybody become number 1 P4P for fighting a contender? :huh

    Stuuuuuuuuuuupid! :yep

If Floyd Mayweather retires for good, I think Manny Pacquiao deserves the top spot. But as long as there are questions as to whether or not he is actually retired, he deserves the top spot (6 titles from 130-154 while remaining undefeated speaks for itself). And also, people shouldn't forget about the winner of Hopkins/Wright or even Rafael Marquez.

Pacman surely has a shot at p4p #1. It always depends on how the top 4 or 5 do and against whom.

Pac's main competition is Wright. If Wright beats Hopkins and does it cleanly, he may be impossible to overtake for a bit.

If he's not your #1 then he should definitely be your #2.

Rightnow Winky is number 3 behind Pacquiao . . . but if he beats Bhops irregardless how controversial it maybe . . . Winky goes up over Pacquaio. :yep

Point of refference here is Bhops and Soto. :D

I actually flip flop them back and forth a bit. Wright has beaten better fighters IMO than Pacman has. Pacman has been more dominant. Wright also beat guys naturally smaller than him.....but Hopkins won't be.

That's right :D that's why I said if Wright beats Bhops there's no way he wouldn't go up in his position in that list now.

Pacman is definately no. 1 in my book, and has for a while. Winky no 2 and PBF has moved up to 3rd spot after the ODLH fight(I had him no 5-7).

If Winky beats BHOP there will be a new #1 for sure, and its not the Filipino.

MAB was past his prime. Too many posters here equate past his prime to mean shot. No, MAB was not prime...he wasn't prime when he beat Hamed either. MAB has been fighting for nearly 2 decades. Morales 2x and MAB are not better than Mosley 2x and Trinidad. Along with of course Quartey and his draw with Taylor. Rememeber, Wright also hasn't lost in years.....Pacman has.
