Well he deserves it. Mayweather retired, Pacquiao was next in line.

Why does he need to relinquish either one?

he has to... just like pac will if he wins the WBC lightweight title. calzaghe will probably relinquish his LHW belts and drop back down to SMW to fight pavlik.

Well I'm not sure of what the rule is . . . but in the past . . . fighters who moved up in weight belt surrenders his ring belt voluntarily.

Pac surrendered his 126 ring belt when he moved up to 130 . . . now as you can see on the report . . . Collin's is expecting Pac to surrender his 135 ring belt if he wins at 135.

let's just hope he does not mess up on june 28 and be forever be known as the shortest reign at #1p4p ever.

I don't see how it can be up for debate really. Pac fights regularly at a high level & nearly always has a fight arranged. He's consistently seeking challenges and, whether you like his style or not, he is a winner.

    He doesn't have to.

So long as he intends to defend both belts within the respective weights for each one.

When a fighter moves up and relinquishes, it's usually because they have no plans to return to that weight (and usually they don't).

He won't. But there will be some indications that 135lbs is beggining to stretch his abilities. Honestly I think the end of the road for Pac is near if he is managed poorly. If I manage him, I keep him at 135lbs and not one weight class higher, rematch him with Marquez, have him take on some 130lb guys that come up for the money, etc. Going up any more will land him a defeat, and there are a few at 135lbs that are even money with him also.
