    who were some boxers who weren't particularly high on athletisicm, but had the intelligence to outbox and out think the opposition.

    Hopkins? Billy Conn? Kostya Tszu? Any Mexicans?

    I would include Joey Maxim in this category.

    James Toney and Sam Langford were the first that came to mind for me

    Max Schmeling
    Tommy Loughran
    Niccolino Locche

    But both of these guys have quite obvious athletic talent, especially sam.

    Archie Moore, James Toney, Floyd Mayweather Jr (athletic but ATG ring smarts too)

    Hopkins yes, Tyszu no, if he was smarter he wouldn't get hit so much and he is a great athlete, he did 275lbs on a clean and jerk

    now that's some strength there,seems like tsyzu could maybe have been a better weightlifter than a boxer :p

    Max Schmeling is good one. Can you think of any examples where he totally outclassed an opponent, like a Hopkins Trinidad kind of ring smarts 101 performance?


    And yeah, Loughran had better be smart going up against a giant like Carnera.

    Don't know too much about Maxim aside from him losing to Jersey Joe and Ezzard Charles. Any stand out performances?

    Johnson was said to be pretty strong for heavyweights back then. May not fall into this shelf of fighters.

    Thats why he such an explosive puncher, the C&J is great for improving explosiveness and translates really well to boxing
