Im curious to ask how people on here think about this subject... Do you think that fighters who are very intelligent in the ring who think and act quickly tend to be intelligent outside the ring or is it a completely different thing? I got thinking about this when watching the BBC s olympic boxing coverage which amir khan was doing and he really did come across as thick as two short planks and in my opinion one of his biggest weaknesses(apart fron chin) is definitly his ring iq. When he gets hurt he cant seem to make any adjustments iv never seen him make any major changes mid fight and im not sure hes capable of doing so, do you lot think this has anyting to do with him being slow in terms of genaral intelligence. Anyone who is doubting this try watch some of the footage from the BBC trust me the kid is slow. He would give away the result of a fight they where about to show the highlights of everyone would laugh about it but then he would do the exact same thing the next night!! Plus his analysis was ridiculous at times just constantly saying the same thing over and over!! god help any fighter who he signs up to khan promotions!!!
Possibly but there isn't much proof. Marquez has an accounting degree, but Juan Diaz is in law school
I dont think anyone ever suggested they were related. Take Mayweather he has probably the highest ring intelligence currently but hes about as ignorant and dumb as they come as a human being.
A lot of boxers would have a high ring IQ when analyzing fights or talking on ESB. It's a different matter having the composure and tools to impose your ring IQ on your opponent, when he's also trying to do the same. Some people freeze in the ring, some people revert back to their basic fighting instinct Boxing has always traditionally been a poor, uneducated mans sport
Wlad is far from dumb but also hasn't handled pressure as well as other boxers. Ali's IQ was 78 http://www.kids-iq-tests.com/famous-people.html
That wouldn't explain Mayweather at all who looks like a genius in the ring but looks the opposite in the outside world. Vitali is possible, he is a politician and fights an extremely smart fight each time.
The guys work ethic and discipline in training is outstanding, he's made all the right decisions in his career.
Ring IQ would be better called ring intuition. When fighters make the right decisions in the ring, sometimes it is because they have prepared mentally well: e.g. if you're hurt, you'd be better off taking a knee than backing up against the ropes... true, ...but most of the time, making the right judgement call in the ring comes down not to a rational decision but to an instinctive decision based on experience and intuition. Is that correlated with IQ intelligence? No. Is it correlated to a different kind of intelligence? Sure.
Yeah I don't think Hopkins and Floyd are generally super intelligent outside of boxing, and I knew plenty of face first brawlers on the boxing team at notre dame with no ring IQ at all, but those guys were smarter than your average boxers. It might be a different kind of intelligence but I do think a lot of it is the ability to just stay cool under a ton of pressure and just knowing when adjustments are necessary. Call it instinct or a distinctive type of intelligence or animal cunning, but not really iq
This relates to all sports , I say the higher the sporting IQ the lower the general intelligence . This is mainly due to one aspect of you life being so full that you never explored the other. i know plenty of footballers who are brilliant at what they do , but couldnt manage a full sentence. Its also like saying if your life is full of general intelligence would this make you a good sports person? The two are poles apart.
There are thousands of PhDs who study this kind of thing all day and they can't even come close to a consensus. There's one theory out there that there's actually 8 distinct kinds of intelligence. There doesn't seem to be much of a correlation between ring intelligence and book smarts though. Just take a look at guys like Bernard Hopkins and Nicky Piper to see that one.
