disagree ... Mosley has been ranked top 3 since his return ... despite his loss to Cotto he still is rated #3 ... since Margarito is #1 ... and Mosley is top #3 then it would only make sense, since its in the rules that if by chance the #1 and the #3 fight then that could be for the championship ... but i'm sure that its because Cotto is still active and it wouldn't make sense that Cotto be cut out.

Jennings/Cotto winner vs the winner of that would be for the championship --

Actually, there is a justification for why they were voting on it. It's stated clearly in their rules that if a no 3 rated fighter is close to as highly regarded as the no 2, then an exception can be made to let him fight for the Ring title. All they were voting for was if Mosley was good enough to be considered a close enough number 3 to be worthy of the title. It was clear that he wasn't number 2, that wasn't what was being debated because his rank was 3. Cotto had beaten Mosley already, so Cotto, being ranked 2, might not be seen as being close to Mosley because he had a victory over him. Cotto got a decision victory of an average of 7-5 in his fight with Mosley so it could seem to be debatable whether Mosley was a close No 3 to him. They chose the conservative approach, like the article said. Not to mention the confusion of Paul Williams being seen by some as the true No 2. I don't understand how Mosley could possibly be ranked that high, but if you go by their rules, then this is why there was so much confusion.

It also doesn't make margo the best fighter, so where exactly does that leave us. It's actually an unanswered question when you think about it. Their system is limited for that reason because its based on a boxing world that doesn't exist, where the best fight only the best contenders. Would be awesome, but that's not how boxing is in reality, so there's disorder created when the ranked best lose to people that aren't ranked close to as high as them.

exactly. Good to see you again by the way Cobbler!

the only instance, and this might work currently where #1 and #3 could work out to fill a vacancy is in the Hw's now that Vitali is back and in this month's mag I believe I saw they have him at #2 (clearly they will not fight each other, obvious reasons of course) that Wlad could spank down on who's #3 (I'd have to check to see who that currently is) to finally allow a HW Ring Champ.:yep

Ring is actaully doing something that is rarely done in boxing today...Upholding thier rules without any money to help them decide....Most of the moves that are made by the ABC groups are made in light of what makes them the most money.

Because Mosley isn't considered the true number 3. His last fight at 147 was a loss to Cotto. His last win was nearly two years ago against Collazo.

its fair if Tony wasnt the ring champ which he wasnt because Floyd was, and when Floyd retired the Ring did not state the winner of Cotto Margarito should be the new champ, though I feel strongly that they should have done so at the time Cotto was the official #2 guy under Mayweather.

However Margarito beating Mosley shouldnt make Tony the ring Champion, it should come in the form of a win over a top notch welter such as Paul Williams or someone on that level since FLoyd is back lets see if that fight happens, so far it looks like Floyd is only interested in the smaller guys Pacquiao and Hatton who he already knocked out.

You make the same point there that Ring magazine made, which is a fair point, but let me remind you that Ring magazine didn't have any problem with making Vitali their champ after fighting a ridiculously over-rated Corrie Sanders... not too many agreed with that decision, but the Ring had no problems with crowning their new champ with such an unglorious victory.

If they can do that, then I don't see why Margo shouldn't be the champ here because a victory over both Mosley AND Miguel Cotto rates far higher in my book than a win over an out of shape Sanders. Sounds to me like Margo is getting the short end of the stick once again. :verysad

SSM shouldn't be ranked until he fights @147. His last fight was at a different weight class. Ditto with Paul Williams. I thought Williams-AM 2 made the most sense, but PTP should leave the smaller men alone and fight where he'd last fought, 160 and 154. Clottey, Berto and Cotto are good matches for Margarito. SSM could be good for viewers, but its really just a money match.
