Yep. Muhammad Ali in 1978? For losing and winning the title to a novice? :huh

 

Muhammad Ali winning in 1978 was a joke. Sure he made history by being the first 3-time HW champ....by going 1-1 against a guy with 8 pro fights. Other guys were more deserving, like Larry Holmes, Roberto Duran, Alexis Arguello (his L was better than losing to a novice) and countless others.

I would've chosen Manny Pacquiao in 2003 over James Toney.

Giving it to Manny Pacquiao last year for beating 3 guys coming off of defeats was kind of iffy to me. I don't know who else I would've given it to though.

 

Donald Curry deserved sole possession of the award in 1985, instead of co-awards with Marvin Hagler.

You gotta fight more than one time to get Fighter of the Year, IMO.

Michael Spinks was more deserving of the co-award than Marvin.

I only saw Wilfred Benitez's win over Antonio Cervantes in 1976, not his other two wins that year, but it would appear that he was more worthy of the award than George Foreman.

 

It's sad that Archie Moore never got a Fighter of the Year award, despite boxing over four different decades. I'd definitely have given it to him instead of Rocky Marciano in '54.

Well its a bit more than "contraversial",he quit,for whatever reasons ,he quit,you cant give the guy an award the same year he turns his back on his opponent and swallows it.The fact that it wasDuran that did it smehow mitigated him in the publics eues,this Manson like ,manic 5 7 ball of aggression,many other fighters would have been scorned for good,whether you ,think he redeemed himself or not is a personal opinion,but whether he quit for fear of the humiliation he was in for ,or he had a physical problem,,and no one has suggested that he was afraid ofLeonard ,the man still quit.

 

Come on, the guy quit, disgracefully.

It wasn't merely "controversial", he quit in the 8th round of a competitive fight when he was getting frustrated.

 

The far superior (back then) mags that were Boxing News and Boxing Illustrated gave their 1978 awards to Pipino Cuevas and Wilfredo Gomez respectively.

 

Maybe not 1980, but a tie with Marv in 1983 would have been a good verdict, or even 1978. He was a lock for the 89 award i'd say until the 'Uno Mas' fiasco just before Christmas.

 

I did not think The Ring gave its Fighter of the year award until 1928?
