When they weighed in at 149lbs, were Burley and Williams light-middleweights or middleweights?

Welter over the limit, why did Armstrongs fights over the feather limit today improve his FW ranking in order for him to get his title shot? That fight would be at WW today without a doubt

Who cares what weight it would be fought at today?

And bad guess. Burley's win over Williams weighing 148 and three quarters was six months before his Middlweight coloured title fight and was the lightest he had fought at in two years. He was a middleweight.

I'm not sure why I'm writing a detailed response as you will surely nitpick 1 random comment and duck the main points

    1. Conn isnt either a good defensive fighter, hes a stick and move fighter. He has average head movement, his parrying

You act like a 28yo Hopkins didnt have defense skills. Hopkins rarely got hit before or after he faced Jones, he always had an excellent defense, he was a more aggressive fighter then for sure

    2. RIGHT

    3. Conn seems to be the type that rellys on his speed and getting in and out, hardly a useful defensive technique against the much faster Jones. You love building up fighters you've seen fight. We can only go on what we've seen and from what we seen.

The fighters he fought werent good or fast enough to exploit this weakness of his

    4. It would be a clinic if he didnt stand on square after throwing shots with his guard completely open, ATG defense right there :patsch

    5. Wasnt Conn was 167lbs against Louis with a greater percentage of bodyfat, that is a smaller foe

So they were equally inconsistant in their own time, many fights over the weight were good enough for rankings.

Basically a fighters weight class is whatever the promoter decided to put it in, Super Middleweight today is Light Heavyweight under the old rule set

To compare fighters you should compare like with like, regardless of the how the promoters want to define the weight class.

I've answered every single point you've raised in discussion with me since you made this false accusation the first time.

I think you mean to say that he isn't even a good defensive fighter. As is often the case your opinion totally contradicts what is on film.

I'm curious as to what you were going to write about "his parrying", where you seem to drift off without finishing the sentence...probably would have made this post more embarrassing than it already is. But never mind.

Yes, he was more aggressive, but that makes him easier to hit, obviously.

And I don't act like "he didn't have defense skills" at all, that's ludicrous. I just "act like" a fighter that has never, ever completed 12 rounds and rellies specifically upon the attributes in boxing which get better with experience - generalship and technical defence - will get better with experience. It's blindingly obvious and you're the only person i've had to explain it to (Repeatedly) in the Classic forum.

Consider this part of your post acknowledged, though obviously there's nothing to debate here.

Never seen him fight, have you?

    :lol::lol:

Krieger beat: Hostak, Jannazo and was the champion of the world

Zale beat: Graziano, Abrams, Apostolini, Hostak, Corbett III, and was champion of the world.

Apostoli beat: Abrams, Garcia, Steele, Corbet III, Thil, Krieger and was champion of the world

Corbett III beat: Mickey Walker, Garcia, Glick, etc etc etc and was blah blah blah.

This is incomplete. I really can't be bothered schooling you in depth. Are you really not embarrassed by your contention that none of these great champions were "good enough" to test Conn?

    :patsch

    Conn is smaller.

If you think about it, really hard, you'll see that on-the ground rankings as fights occur (where it is impossible, for the most part, to see into the future) and retrospective ATG rankings can be judged differently.

Just curious... but am I the only one who thinks it's inconceivable for Joe Louis to beat Mike Tyson. Just can't picture it.

mcgrain a quick question for you, i think jones would beat conn although my pick would be for a decision win. reason being is because of how passive jones fought nearly all of the time.
lets just say jones came out looking for the knockout kinda like he was with montell griffin in the second fight of course. do you think he could ko conn or do you rate conns defense and skill to highly for even this jones to ko?

i think tyson would ko louis somewhere in the early-mid rounds, i think he is stylistically wrong for joe. so you are not the only one

I'd say that Jones never cracked a chin as good as Conn's, and Conn was exceptional defensively, so the odds don't favour Jones KOing him. But nothing is impossible.

He's referring to Jones's reputation for fighting safety first, a reputation that was checked in The Ring's explanation for why he didn't rank higher on their list of ATG punchers.

    6. Conn is smaller.[/quote]

    1. This displays Conns ability to use his footwork to get him in and out, I see that as his main defensive asset alongside his clinching. I dont think his inside defense his defensive headwork and countering ability certainly isnt as good as Toney.

He does stay square a tad too long after getting his shots off and if Louis had seen this and timed him early he could have scored an earlier KO

I think this as much an example of either Louis's inadequacies with his plodding style too or perhaps it was 1 of those times where Louis didnt show up. He was also past his physical prime but he still had far less problems when he adapted in the rematch

Jones would have beaten that version of Louis and lost the rematch

    2. Hopkins still had excellent defensive footwork and head movement, just watch his fights, plus he was 28 and had better speed and workrate. Maybe I'm the only person you've talked to Classic thats actually watched early Hops :good

    3. Outside of Louis no, what other fights of his are available?

    4. I dont care none had anywhere near the speed, power, reflexes, technique or skill of Jones. Its not close

    5. I think your confusing good enough to test him and good enough to expose his weaknesses to beat him. Im speaking of the latter and none of those men would expose his weaknesses as blantatly as a prime RJJ. We may have a better idea if Conn had faced faster slicker type like Burley, Charles or Marshall. I think Burley wanted to face him

Yaroz and Corbett did beat him, although he was only 19-20 then

    6. Thought u said i was bsing about him being smaller
