Ring Magazine's "Fight of the Year" should be named after Arturo Gatti.

Maybe not the official awards, but Ring does have those "Unofficial Awards", which are named for certain fighters. And, they happen to include the Never in a Bad Fight Award. Attatch Gatti's name to that, and you have a pretty fitting little tribute, methinks.

 

Basilio been in more fights of the year than Gatti if your going by that point.

That award has been around since the late 20's. I would not change it because of Gatti. Fight of the year has been part of a ring thing WAY before Gatti.

 

I think it would be a good idea.

no - leave it alone. What about fighters that die in the ring? They get nothing? They surely had the same heart as Gatti. Entertaining fight with Ward, another C+ fighter, doesn't get someone name on an award.

 

Some peeps here are gayishly sentimental.

 

As much as I respect Gotti, I also respect the other great and not so great prizefighters who has passed away. Shouldn't they be considered also?

That, sir, is a damn good idea. And Thread Stealer, I think naming the awards after fighters would be GREAT.

 

Gatti is no flavor of the week.He was HUGE for Boxing for years.

 

It's all speculation at the moment but did he really abuse his wife on frequent occassions? If so, I would not recommend the ring to give it to Gatti.
