The Ring is pleased to announce that world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather has been selected as Fighter of the Year for 2007. Mayweather fought twice in ’07, winning a 12-round decision over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5 in Las Vegas to capture the WBC super welterweight title, and knocking out Ricky Hatton in the 10th round on December 8 in defense of the world welterweight championship.

It is the second time Mayweather has won the honor, having also been The Ring’s 1998 Fighter of the Year.

The award dates back to 1928, when heavyweight champion Gene Tunney was the first recipient.

Other Ring magazine awards for 2007:

Fight of the Year: Israel Vazquez KO 6 Rafael Marquez II

Round of the Year: Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez II, Round 3

Knockout of the Year: Nonito Donaire KO 5 Vic Darchinyan

Upset of the Year: Nonito Donaire KO 5 Vic Darchinyan

Comeback of the Year: Paul Malignaggi

Event of the Year: Floyd Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya

Read all the details in the April 2008 issue of The Ring, on sale January 29.

i think it must have been done in a second.

    malinaggio was never a champ.
went in and hanged tough v cotto in a fight few expected him to win, then came back and when hatton vacated the belt beat a tough but limited journeyman in ndou.

why not say marquez who lost his title abroad to an unknown but good fighter in john in 2006 and in 2007 stepped up a weoight and beat atg barrera and rocky juarez .

IMO way more significant a comback to the top.

... I mean, he exposed the flaws of Ponce de leon's style, but lost (some "experts" think penalosa won), then he KOd Johnny Gonzalez with a brutal punch to win a belt, just a suggestion, anyway, the guy's 35, i think

Comeback of the year: Henry Maske

Beating the reigning WBA cruiserweight champ (I know, Mormeck was the real champ) after a 11 year break is pretty impressive.

But again, the RING is an American Magazine.

Comeback of the year: Jorge Arce

After that brutal one sided loss to Mijares he returns with back to back KOs.

Thats true, I would go with Malignaggi then.

Penaloza is ok but he was losing in the cards before he landed his liver shot.
