the talent pool 10 years ago was better

 

Today's current list is a joke because of who they have at #1.

 

It would have been a bigger insult if the P4P list looks like this:

1. Floyd Mayweather
2. Juan Manuel Marquez

The list 10 years ago looked much better I agree...

 

That you might be interested to see what they were up to back in October '99 and how they got on that P4P list:

#1 Roy Jones Jr - 2 years into a reign as the unified champ at 175, having previously picked up belts at 160 & 168. On the back of a shut-out win over Reggie Johnson.

#2 Floyd Mayweather Jr - Fresh on the back of a win over Carlos Gerena, his 4th defence after picking up the WBC 130 belt with a stoppage win over Genaro Hernandez.

#3 Felix Trinidad - On the back of that win over De La Hoya, unifiying the division. Had also beaten Hugo Pineda and a finished Pernell Whitaker.

#4 Oscar De La Hoya - On the back of that defeat to Felix Trinidad, had previously knocked out Oba Carr and got a contentious decision against Ike Quartey.

#5 Shane Mosley - Superb run at lightweight, knocked out Golden Johnson, John Brown and then just stepped up to 147 against Wilfredo Rivera.

#6 Mark Johnson - Stepped up to claim the IBF super-fliyweight title and become a two-weight world champion and defended it once.

#7 Ricardo Lopez - On the back of a win over Rosendo Alvarez & then stepping up to claim the IBF light-flyweight title & become a two weight world champion.

#8 Erik Morales - Beaten Wayne McCullough in the same month, his 8th defence of his WBC 122 title.

#9 Bernard Hopkins - Still on that run as IBF 160 champ, stretching 4 years at this point. Had knocked out Robert Allen in his last fight.

#10 Stevie Johnston - Beat Cesar Bazan to claim his WBC 135 title back, and then on the back of a win over Angel Manfredy.

 

Damn I miss those days, RJJ was a showman and I couldn't wait for his next fight. Now I wish he just wouldn't have a next fight.

 

First, Paul Williams should be on the newest list.

Second, the interesting thing about Hopkins being there is that at that point, is that his resume wasn't that good. It serves as a little reminder that maybe just winning at a championship level consistently should get rewarded, even if the A+ name is lacking- 4 guys fitting that description now would include Wlad, Dawson, Hasegawa, and Abraham. Not surprisingly, of the 4, Dawson shows up on the most lists. Which is a convenient time for me to make my next point...

It should be pointed out that there's no chance in hell Hopkins makes that list at that point in time if he's not based out of the US, Mexico, or Puerto Rico. It's not surprising a US magazine would give that region the benefit of the doubt, mind you, but just something to keep in mind when P4P lists get published, although people are making their lists more global than they were 10 years ago. Kostya Tszyu, at the point in time those rankings were made, had just as good, if not better, case for that spot for example.

 

Yeah I made a post about this a few months ago............AS OF NOW it really shouldn't ready P4P as there aren't really 10 GREAT ELITE fighters in the mold of the list 10 years ago and years pasts....

Example, BHOP and Shane are STILL on the list and was just DYING to be put out of their misery by their :roll:heir apparents:roll: in Magarito and Pavlik.....

It should read "THE BEST 10 FIGHTERS OF TODAY"
