I sense a fly being cast over the water. For the sake of argument good boxers usally out foxed old Oscar,Ellis and Folley to name a couple, and they dropped him along the way.The story of a Holmes fight would be left jab ,left jab ,left jab till eventually, right cross and good night. Don't cry for me Argentina.

Ringo's crab-like style and physical strength might give Holmes trouble at times, but eventually Holmes takes complete control of this fight and wins big. It might go to the cards, in which case Holmes wins a one-sided decision, or Larry might even connect with enough mean right hands to beat Bonavena inside the distance.

What Jimmy Ellis did to Ringo, Holmes could do that much more decisively.

Bonavena doesn't have the footwork to deal with Holmes. This is a decision bout and would go about like the first Shavers/Holmes fight.

Let's see. Bonavena lost twice by disq. which does not count. He lost to the experienced Folley in his 9th bout, Frazier twice (he could have won the first), Ellis, Ali, Patterson and Lyle. None of them could knock Oscar out except Ali who did it in the 15th and last round rather unexpectedly. If we give credence to his knockdowns by Ellis and Folley, we have to give the same to the fact that he survived the full distance against Frazier (twice) and Lyle who were better hitters than Holmes. Possibly, Patterson also hit harder than Larry.

Also, a lot depended on the frame of mind Bonavena came into a fight. In the right frame of mind, he could make it a hard, long night for Holmes.

So my view is, Holmes by decision but certainly no "Good Night" for Ringo.

Are we talking about a round of black jack? I hear Ringo loved to gamble and lived for the night life. I bet he'd drink Larry under the table too with a round of shots..

    Abraq: very smart analogy ...

I say Holmes beats him like he did a prime Trevor Berbick, a similiar fighter in his own way ...

Berbick wouldn't of given any version of Frazier the fights that Bonavena gave him though.

I'll pick Holmes by late KO. Bonavena is very wild and Holmes would catch him Mike Weaver style.
