I've had the dubious honor of seeing several controversial fights live and ringside/near ringside, and lo and behold, I had differing scorecards when I scored them on TV at times.

Thought I'd put up a thread listing them so I could discuss them for you guys if you were curious.

    Whitaker vs. De La Hoya
    DLH v. Quartey
    Lewis v. Holyfield I&II
    Castillo vs. Casamayor
    Corrales vs. Casamayor II
    DLH vs. Sturm
    Hopkins vs. Taylor I
    Mosley vs. DLH
Ruiz vs. Holyfield I, II, III
    Byrd vs. Oquendo
    Byrd vs. Golota
    Rahman v. Toney I
    DLH vs. Trinidad
    Wright v. Taylor

Those are all the ones I remember attending that ended up being controversial. I'll edit this post with my exact scores when I can check my notebook. Still have vivid memories about most of them, though, and I agreed with the judges live and disagreed with the results at home quite a few times.

It was a landslide. Tito fans next to me cheered their man, but I had Oscar utterly dominant, and it didn't get closer on my couch the next day.

I didn't even notice The Great Retreat till the 11th. For 10 rounds, Tito looked lost, and Oscar looked sharp. His right hand was right on. Tito's eyes were rather wide, and he looked gunshy, Oscar looked confident.

Looked like a long amateur fight between a stud and an outmatched, opponent, to be honest. When Oscar put on his track shoes, Tito still couldn't accomplish anything.

Looked to me like Oscar could have TKOed Tito early. He was that dominant.

    Could you discuss Lewis-Holyfield II?

How vulnerable was Lewis had Holyfield been younger and able to turn it on and keep it on?

I had Holyfield beating Lewis live in the rematch:oops:

I was caught up in how well he was doing in the middle rounds. Some of those left hooks were beautiful, and it didn't look like Lewis' jab was landing all that much.

It looked like Lewis' fight early and super late, and Holyfields for the long stretch in the middle. I thought Evander was boxing him cagey, like he did with Bowe II; I didn't think he could turn it up and and do more, I thought he was conjuring a great technical performance because it was 100% necessary to win the fight.

I wanted to hold on to the opinion the Commander had been jipped for years, but I finally watched the broadcast in 2006, and I scored it 116-112 Lewis. The Holyfield mid round rush, those vivid memories of those hooks and rights, that happened in two rounds. I was rather embarrassed. I wasn't watching with a level head, probably the same as guys who swear that Ali-Spinks II was entertaining live.

Cheers magna. I too had Oscar winning wide.

Interesting post regarding Lewis v Holy 2. Who do you think they do prime for prime?

I've only ever been to one fight card live, when Bernard Hopkins fought Steve Frank for the middlweight title.

The first six or seven seconds were kind of hard to score, but it got easier.

I was at the Adamek-Cunningham rematch this past December. I had Cunningham winning 8-4 or 7-4-1. I, along with most people at the fight (mostly huge Adamek fans, especially where I was sitting), felt Cunningham deserved the victory.

Upon rewatching, I still felt Cunningham deserved the decision and that the judges were wrong.

I've heard that, but that is what we have press row for: To help us out with that picture.

Just about everybody there scored the fight for Whitaker. Just like Cunningham-Adamek II, discussed above.

The Polish fans there were ecstatic with surprise when Adamek was declared the winner. The Cunningham fans were angry, and us neutral fans were disgusted. I saw several Polish fans walking away shaking their head with a smile.

    Magna,

the points you make are interesting, i think. In fact, i think that it is one of the reasons why people are often to quick to overturn decisions just for the sake of it. Sometimes TV does not tell the true picture. And people often forget that it is the judges and not the public who need to be impressed. THe problem is that some judges seem to be scoring not based on who they think is winning but on who they want to win. That is very sad and seems to be a problem generally. IN fact, i think we are now at a stage where it would be better to have No Decision fights, or do something to completely change the scoring. Maybe something like one point for a knock down? There would be a lot of draws but far less controversial. It is like that anyway. Most people dont even accept the results of close fights nowadays anyway.

There is a very interesting article floating around from when film was in its infancy where jack johnson describes the jeffries fight to a reporter, at its theatre viewing. He would often say "that one really hurt" at times where the film appeared to show a glancing blow and often what looked like clean blows he would comment that it didnt hurt at all.

I didn't have it a draw but I had it only 2 rounds for Whitaker. I think it was Pat Putnam who agreed with me on the scoring. Anyways, I didn't feel it was a robbery just a decision that disagreed with my card.
