‘Having been training 4-5 times a week since announcing the aim of achieving a professional boxing licence & stepping into the ring, it is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves on @Betfair #DefendertoContender challenge.’

Wasn't expecting this news at all.

But I think the timing is right and he has come to the correct decision.

Nothing left to prove in my book.

Looking back on his career it will only grow in strength through the years after soaking in what he gave to the sport.

Will always remember him living through the warriors code of Defender, Contender, never surrender, doing it all with splendor.

He didn't even get started so how is that a retirement?
I wonder why the BBBofC denied him a license.

    He did.

It was behind closed doors in order to protect the public from witnessing the abhorrent level of damage he was giving to his opponents.

bbboc refused to license him, you have to wonder why given their seemingly less than stringent application of their own rules at times. add to that there are fighters who should not be anywhere near a ring who easily get licenses.

not that im saying the decision is a bad one.

in any event boxing will miss him more than ward and dirrell combined.

I've heard rumours he knocked down AJ in sparring session with a big right kick to the head. He thought he would have been playing football btw.

He doesn`t have any amateur experience and was old for a boxer.

Maybe it is because he has a such a high profile. BBBofC likely saw that he was unfit to turn pro and they didn't want to risk him making them look bad.

Or preventing another Flintoff style embarassment. Looking horrendous with an opponent doing everything in their power to lose to the "celebrity". Making boxing look like WWF.

He heard Frank Warren wanted to book him for June 9th.
He didn't fancy tackling the Gypsy King.
