I hate Top Rank as much as anyone but I'm having a hard time seeing how exactly they did Rios wrong in any way. He was handed a lucrative fight with the biggest star in their stable after a clear loss and after he should have been 1-2 in his last 3. If Top Rank did Rios did dirty, I'd hate to see how you'd characterize their treatment of Alvarado.
He can compete at 147 no problem. He just needs to stay in the gym and not let things get under his skin. I am not a psychologist but I think based upon a long time experiences working with people with behavioral and mental problems. I think Rios like a lot of athletes is a bit bi-polar. He has really high highs and really low lows. The hate of some boxing fans and the lack of respect and fights from Top Rank put him in a real funk. The man was depressed. He wants to fight and give the fans what they came to see. A toe to toe, knock them out or get knocked out sort of fight. His weight issues plus the bad press and fan hatred really depressed him. He acts as if he doesn't care but he wants to be seen as warrior and some one fans respect and some one who they want to watch fight. Rabid fans fail to see the human side of their heroes and those they say they hate. As a coach and trainer we spend as much if not more time dealing with the mental aspect of a boxer as we do the physical.
Top Rank made promises to Brandon and failed to keep those promises. Whether this was a dirty thing to do or if Brandon's actions were at least a portion of the reason why. I would say probably. Letting him sit for nearly a year, while all the while promising him a fight soon was at the least unfair.
You ever have any boxing shows up that way. All I need is a good excuse. My wife and I are planning a trip up to Montana to see her sister. May be we can come to Alaska too. You can hook me up with Sara Palin.
We have local Thursday night fights. They're fun at times, but pretty much what one might expect from local comp. I'll see what i can do with Palin, although I hate her, I got dibs!
What time period are you referring to here? His most recent inactivity? Because I would say that had as much to do with HBO's shrinking budget and Top Rank's lack of ability or desire to promote without being subsidized by them as anything else. Rios is hardly the only Top Rank fighter who has been inactive over the period in question.
Good to hear flatlander. Always thought it was maybe the start of being punch drunk. So reassuring to hear that. Must be a nitemare in the rios household for some peace and quiet between him and tony. Lol. Enjoying his interviews.
