finally saw it and maybe expectations got in the way but i didnt think it was this horrible robbery

im not even a rios fan either

Abril did much better than any one expected and fought a pretty looking style with crisp shots and a nice looking defense but i dont think he dominated to the degree that some are saying

I think many people think its this huge robbery because they thought rios was gonna run him over and destroy him early or they got carried away by some of Abrils work

I dont think this was anywhere near as bad as Williams Lara or Shumenov vs Campillo 2

Abril made Rios look bad, gave him lots of difficulty and troubled him a lot but Rios had his fair share of work

in plenty of rounds Abril would be up close and have his guard up and block plenty but he didnt block everything....while this was going on Rios was doing all of the punching and Abril was just blocking but not stopping everything from getting thru

i didnt do a round by round score so i cant tell you what i think of the judging but Rios out worked Abril in plenty of rounds

now i dont like to go by ineffective aggression but there were long stretches of rounds where Rios was in close throwing not landing everything but he got in...Abril would throw jabs and straight rights and they were crisp nice shots but not all of his stuff landed, hit gloves a decent amount

i felt the commentary was a little biased too never seemed to call a single thing Rios landed

not saying Abril didnt deserve to win but i dont think this was exactly the crime of the century as suggested by many

Sadly, I don't see it changing. Up until now, all Cubans with aspirations to professional careers in boxing and baseball have had to escape the Island. All of our past and current pro boxers are " defectors ", and the best chance they have to escape is when they compete abroad.

Cuba has been a totally isolated Country in the center of the action, and has only showed it's talent at the Olympics and amateur competitions. Until the communists leave Cuba the situation will not change. :-(

That's why i was surprised to hear that Abril owns property in Cuba and can come to the USA and have pro bouts and still come and go as he pleases to and from Cuba.

Is Raul Castro ( who is now running Cuba ) softening up.

The vast majority of Cuban athletes are black, most specially in boxing. There are some white Cuban boxers like Angelo Santana. While Abril may look white he isn't, he is mixed and has Afro-traits in his face.

That's just the way it is in Cuba, the blacks are into boxing and all rough and tough sports but the whites are into lesser rough contact sports!

Plus, Cuba's current population is about 75% black.

To some extent yes. Cuba is a bit more opened now but they are still under a brutal dictatorship. Until the communist lose the grip the situation will remain the same. I don't know about Abril's status over there, but Cubans are allowed to travel to Cuba and come back.

    Saludos! :good
