In most every fight I have seen Rios in he starts slowly. He pressures and pushes a fighter back while landing a few body and headshots. He is perfectly willing to give away a few first rounds just to safely feel his opponent's power and to look for openings. I can only remember a hand full of bouts in which he did not do this. With Alvarado he had no need to do this. He knew exactly what Alvarado had and he knew his style. So he went all out from the first bell. Alvarado did not expect that all. Mike is as bit of a slow starter himself and he got caught cold.
If your opponent starts fast you need to at least start...Mike never did, that didn't have much to do with Rios imo. Anyone would've looked good against a guy who literally did nothing until the late third but, by then he had already taken too much punishment.
The first round saw Rios hurting Alvarado immediately. Rios did not let Mike breath let alone recover. We will never know how prepared Alvarado was because Rios didn't give him time to find out. That was the fight plan and it worked.
Alvarado just basically coverered up from the start. His hands were up to his face without a clue of where the punches were coming from. These guys had fought eachother twice before, and he had never reacted that way to incoming. The fact that Alvarado did this shows me he was neither physically or mentallly prepared for anything. Rumors have been circulating for awhile this guy is on drugs and I think the way he fought gives credence to it. 1. Alvardo could'nt react to incoming 2. He could'nt get off against Rios for God's sake who's practically a stationary fighter.
Alvarado is facing probably 2 years in the slammer for illegal gun possesion and car theft he only came for his paychek
Rios moved and picked his punches pretty well too. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with having fought Alvarado before but he sure did improve on this.
Alvarado looked appallingly bad in his training and mannerisms all pre fight, there was no reason to think he would fight any different.
Indeed. When I saw the vids I was shocked and immidiately knew how to pick and by stoppage, although I expected it to go longer because of Alvarado's toughness. The reason Rios was allowed to have such a fast start is because there wasn't much coming back, so he could just have his way with a walking human punchbag.
bam bam left Kansas for the same exact reasons that Alvarado should've left the mile high a very long time ago......Alvarado had huge potential, but unfortunately it's too late......he'll be a solid gatekeeper now...if prepared..he might still give a few good names problems, and give us fans great fights....but with all the charges he's facing...who knows
Alvarado didn't even look remotely prepared and by the first round you could tell he knew that he couldn't win. In the corner after the 2nd round it sounded like he wanted to quit but his corner wouldn't let him. Wasted time slot for HBO, next time maybe get somebody in there who wants to fight
