For once I'm not going to RIP the guy. He was a complete *****, well known for taking advantage of young girls and well know for fabricating quotes, etc. He's not been allowed in the BWAA's meetings for over a decade because of his behaviour. Obviously it's sad that anyone dies, but the guy was a **** of the highest order.
I like listening to really old school people about boxing. To me, a lot of things about the sport back then were much better than it is now. I remember watching a clip of Sugar and he was talking about going to New York for the first time, stopping by at Jack Dempsey's restaurant where he had some cheesecake, and then he went to watch his first fight at the Garden. All those little things have always really appealed to me and I can imagine how amazing it must have been back then. I enjoy listening to people talk about the 'good ol' days' in smoky arenas, watching the likes of Ike Williams and Henry Armstrong. Boxing has changed a lot, some of it for good and a lot of it not so good. Of all those people who I could listen to reminisce for hours, Bert Sugar was the most enthralling. I disagreed with some of his opinions but he was a great character and boxing will miss him.
It depends what you regard as being "young girls" as an old fella, they maybe young but they are still adults in law. Its not often I disagree with DF but I think that post is inappropriate to say the least..
Anyone who criticises someone for taking advantage of young girls (within reason :blood) has problems.
I stole this from Twitter: Sugarism: "Whenever someone complains about my cigars, I say if it weren't for Winston Churchill smoking 25 a day we'd be speaking German."
I never like speaking ill of the dead. Especially so soon. And those who are 'spiritual' will know what i mean.
Yeah i think if you don't rate the man, don't post/say anything. If he's a Gary Glitter type then fine, if he just likes em young fair play to him .
